Description

In this lesson the students will focus their attention on the function, pronunciation and form of SHOULD. The Ss will do exercises to practice this modal verb following the controlled, semi-controlled, freer practice pattern.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the modal verb "should" in the context of clothes to wear in a Turkish proposal/wedding.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of clothes to wear in a Turkish proposal/wedding.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • Set the context of this part of the lesson

* Show pictures of some proposals and let students discover what it is all about. * Once you notice Ss have a clear concept in mind, try to elicit some words such as "engagement", "wedding" and "proposal". If the students do not say any of the words, just write "the proposal" on the board.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

* Ask the students "What are these people wearing?", have them discuss in pairs. * Listen to the students answers and ask "Do you think these are good clothes for a proposal?" * Listen to the students, and write on the board "Should a man wear shorts for a proposal?" Listen to the students, write their answer on the board. Write in parenthesis "(it is not a good idea)" * Seat the students in groups and write on the board "What should a man wear for a proposal?", have students discuss.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

* Write some of the answers of the students on the board, and have them repeat. Ask them to tell you when to use "should", listen to the answers and then write on the board "when it is a good idea" "advice". Then make them realize its form.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

* Give the first handout, and have the students write questions, affirmative and negative sentences. * Have them check in pairs, and ask some students to write their answers on the board. * Have students correct if any mistakes.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for freer practice

* have five groups and give them some questions, them have them go around the class find the answer of the question. The answers will be sticked on the walls.

Freer Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

*Show a picture of a couple about to get married. Introduce the words "Groom" and "Bride" and ask students to discuss in groups the following question: "What should the bride wear in a Turkish wedding?" "What should the groom wear in a Turkish wedding?" *Monitor students are doing the task, and after some minutes dismiss the class.
