Traffic, Present progressive
Elementary, 2B level

Description

In this lesson, Sts will learn about the present progressive through eliciting or guided discovery, based on discussion of traffic and traveling. The T will elicit information from the Sts by asking questions and a basic fill in the gap exercise on the board. The Sts will then work in pairs to create present continuous questions and answers using a fixed set of words. Sts will then work to make more original sentences using a selection of verbs. Finally students will describe what they see in a picture, while the other one draws it.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Present continues tense in the context of Traffic and travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will tell a short story, related to traffic. At the end the T will start to elicit Sts to complete his story by using the present continues tense.

Test #1 (6-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The T will briefly elicit Sts to use the progressive continues tense, by asking questions and having the Sts do a gap fill on the board. If Sts seem confused the T will beginning switch into guided discovery by writing present simple and try to get students to make present continues sentences with the same words.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Start with CCQs about the use of present progressive. Introduce more examples if Sts have difficulties, as well as comparisons with present simple. Use group work, and have Sts in groups try and decide when an event is taking place, as well as starts and stops. Sts can then practice with Grammar exercise 2 as part of pair work. If they still have difficulty the class will have to discuss this more after FB. During the exercise Sts will be called on to write their answers on the board. Sts will then conduct exercises 3 on page 85 alone, and exercise 4 in pairs. It is very important Sts understand not to show names from ex. 3 to their friends

Test #2 (6-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T will demonstrate with a St on the board, by describing a picture and having the St draw it on the board. Afterwards T will explain Sts cannot look at the picture, then give it to one of them. While Sts play this game, T will pass out the other sheet and after 5 min. tell them to change roles.
