Describe Objects you don't know
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about describing objects that they don't know through guided discovery based on a listening. The lesson starts with a matching the conversations to the objects in the pictures. In the next stage they discuss the similarities and differences between the objects. They find the distinctions between describing something vaguely, categorization and comparison with the help of matching exercise. Finally they have time choose something to describe and to prepare what they want to say.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about describing objects in the context of conversation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vague language in the context of describing objects

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask what they have talked about possessions previously

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Focus learners on the pictures and what objects might be used for with the class.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Get students to match the conversations to the objects in the pictures. Then they discuss three questions in pairs before checking as a class

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Give instructions, play recording 2.26 again stopping after each conversation so pairs can discuss the similarities and differences. Don't go through the answers. Learners check their ideas in a small group with the conversations on the H.O

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They find distinctions between three categories and match them on the board. They choose something to and to prepare what they want to say. Monitoring the students if they have any difficulties. Learners take turns to describe and listen to each other's descriptions and guess they are describing.
