Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the learners will start a new unit. The unit leads and sets the context for the upcoming lessons. The listening is the source for the vocabulary exercises and target language use.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about personal qualities in the context of being dancer

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of personal qualities
  • To provide practice of modal verbs in the context of Anne's interview
  • To provide practice of personal qualities in the context of jobs

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson content and engage students

I will divide students into two group. One volunteer from each group sits in a chair with their backs to the board, facing their group, I will write a word " Personal" so that the volunteer can't see the word their group must give hints to their volunteer guesses the word first. The first one to guess the word gets a point for their team and nominate someone else. The second word is Qualities and the same process is applied.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Learners quickly look at the quotes about success that are posted on the wall and try to work out what they mean from the surrounding context. I will go through them with the class. I will check pronunciation of discipline and initiative. Then in pairs learners discuss opinions giving reasons for their class. I will ask the class what personal qualities they need in the army? (e.g) discipline and initiative (to making decisions when things go wrong ) and you probably need to have confidence in your abilities) I will offer ideas ask them why? Encourage them to give reasons. Learners will continue individually before comparing with others. Discussion : Learners talk in groups about their ideas.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

I will ask the class what they can guess about her from the picture. Then play recording 2.13. Learners put the topics in order. FB as a class

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Learners read through the list of points. I will check understanding of be pushed(= made to do something that you don't necessarily want to do ) and be skinny (= be thin) then play recording 2.13 again. Learners tick the things Anne says are important. They compare with a partner before checking as a class

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

4.We will talk about two points from Anne's interview in groups. 5.Vocabulary Matching people to jobs and activities activity; we will look at the first sentence with the class and i will be helping class eliciting some idea e.g novelist or actor for the exercise number six they will work alone and come up with 3-4 sentences about their jobs. I will remind them to use vocabulary they have learnt in the lesson. For the last exercise learners take turn to describe the job they have written about they listen to each job in turn and discuss who would be best suited to it in the group.
