Description

In this lesson the main objective is to have students use imperatives to give and follow instructions. At first; students` attention will be dragged to some pictures showing instructions/signs found in different places. The task is to have them guess the place where those instructions can be found. They they will be asked which instructions are more difficult to follow in their country, and after listening to some answers, the lessons topic will be introduced. To follow up, a listening activity will be used to have the students listen to some commands in a daily life situation, build up vocabulary, practice pronunciation and finally have some oral production.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of phrasal verbs in the context of giving and following instructions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide examples of phrasal verbs used to give and follow instructions from a listening in the context of using equipment.
  • To provide fluency pronunciation practice in linking consonants and vowels in the context of using equipment.
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in giving and following instructions in the context of using equipment.

Procedure

Warm up/ Lead in (8-10 minutes) • 1. To activate previous knowledge. 2.To set the lesson context and engage students

The teacher will get in classroom and greet the students. After that s/he will ask students to take a look at some pictures related to commands that were previously pasted all around the classroom. Once the students have seen the pictures, the teacher will ask them to discuss in groups the following question: "Where can we see those signs/instructions?" After listening to the students, the teacher will ask the students if people follow or respect such signs in their countries' and why so. Then the teacher will try to take a selfie with his phone, but s/he will pretend s/he does not know how to do it, and will ask the students to help him.

Focussed language in context (8-10 minutes) • 1. To have the students listen to some instructions. 2. To introduce the vocabulary of the class.

Before listening to the recording, the teacher will ask the students if they have ever had problems following instructions' and after that he will show a picture of a guy who apparently has problems with his computer. After that, the teacher will have the students listen to the recording and find out what the real problem is and if the found a solution in the end. After listening to the students' answers, the teacher will ask them to report some of the instructions, and after listening to some, s/he will ask them to put some stages of the conversation presented in the recording into the correct order, after that the students will listen to it again and check their answers.

Controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To have the students practice the vocabulary meant to be taught

The teacher will elicit some of the instruction of the listening from the students, and clarify those students might not understand. Next, pronunciation will be stressed. After that the teacher will give a hangout where students will have to use some of the words elicit to complete some sentences. After that, he will ask the students to check with a partner. Next they will check in open class with the recording.

Less Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • to listen for more detailed information

The students will listen to some instructions and they will have to guess what the instructions might be for. They will have to discuss in groups and then share their ideas with the rest of the class.

Freer Speaking Practice (8-10 minutes) • To have the students produce instructions using the language taught.

In groups the students will be asked to think about a gadget, and the will have to write some instructions. After 4 minutes, they will be asked to say the instructions and the other teams will have to guess what they are for.
