Abc Gap-fill HO EngUnLtd_ Int_Ss Bk, p49 ex2a
Abc EngUnLtd_ Int_Ss Bk, U6.2 p49 ex3/4

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review, and practice of verbs followed by -ing in the context of advice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of making suggestions for problems

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce myself. Telling Ss' name and greet them. Play Hangman game to elicit " ADVICE" and introduce the topic of the lesson. Tell Ss a problem I had with my laptop last week and I could not chat with my mother over Skype. And ask them to guess what I did. Ask Ss: Have you ever had such a problem? How? Ss discuss about the similar problems with their partners. Take w/c FB.

Exposure and highlightening (9-11 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a gap-fill activity and draw students' attention to the target language

Ask Ss to tell me about Vishal's problems which they listened to. Ss in pair tell each other what they remember. Take W/C FB. Ask Ss to tell me if they have ever had similar problems and tried solving them. (Ss work in pairs for 1 minute to come up with some ideas) Take W/C FB. Give out ex1a. Ss read and complete the sentences with matching. Ss peer-check. Take w/c FB. Drill the sentences for fluency reasons. (WC, SOLO)

Clarification (9-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss work in pairs/small groups to decide if the sentences show complaining or giving suggestions. Take w/c FB. Ask Ss to think of a common structure between all sentences. Ss in pairs/small groups come up with verbs followed by -ing and 1 x S comes to write them on the WB. Put the verbs with the structure on the WB. Drill these sentences: My router keeps going wrong. Have you tried switching it off? Take w/c FB. Focus Ss on the phrases. Concept check meanings: If the router keeps going wrong, can you watch a long movie on the Internet? (NO) If you try switching on and off again and again in your laptop, can you watch a clip on youtube during that?(NO) If you try and avoid leaving your router on tonight, can you surf the net tonight?(NO) If you think about turning on your router tonight, do you have want to have an idea about tonight?(YES) If you have considered getting a new router, do you have have a plan to go to Teknosa? (YES) Elicit intonation of sentences: Which words are stressed? I avoid sleeping in the afternoon. (avoid, sleeping, afternoon) Elicit that verbs followed by -ing are generally stressed.

Controlled and Semi-controlled Practice (9-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Focus Ss on ex2a. Ss work in pairs to to complete the conversation between Vashal and Nicky using the given expressions in the box. Ss listen to the CD and w/c FB. I play the CD to check their answers. I project the dialogue on the WB and ask Ss to play the role. I ask this question: What would you do in Vishal's situation? Ss work in pairs and they come up with some ideas. Take some w/c FB

Free Practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language and personalization.

Ss work in pairs think of things in their life they are not happy about. Ss work in pairs tthink of things in their life they are not happy about. Monitor and help where needed.
