Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greats the SS and says they are going to have 1 minute to work alone and complete the sentence with 3 things which are true for them: I'm studying English in order to ... ICQs: 1. How many things do you write? (3) 2. How much time do you have? (1 minute) 3. Are you going to talk with each other? (No) After a minute SS discuss their answers in pairs (PW). (3 minutes) Content FB: each S tells the class about their partner. (WC) Language FB: EC,

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To engage in the topic

T shows the SS pictures of children studying Mandarin and asks them to discuss the following questions in pairs. (PW) 1. Which foreign language are these children learning? 2. Do they enjoy it? 3. Which foreign language did you learn at school? Language FB: One of the SS answers the questions to the WC.

Pre-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To pre-teach the vocabulary from the recording

T gives out one set of FC and tells the SS to work in pairs and match the words with the definitions (3 minutes). FB: SS check their answers with the right ones.

Exposure: Listening for gist (3-5 minutes) • To provide listening for gist practice

T says the SS are going to listen to a BBC news article and choose the right title for it: 1. European languages are the languages of the past. 2. Are children learning the right language at school? 3. Are foreign languages necessary at school? When they have finished they compare their answers in pairs. Then the T asks one of the SS to come up to the WB and mark the right answer.

Exposure: Listening for detail (8-10 minutes) • To provide an exposure to language through listening for detail

T says the SS are going to listen to the article again, but before listening they are going to have 2 minutes to try to guess if the statements are True or False. (solo) When finished T plays the recording for SS to check their answers. After listening they compare the answers in pairs (PW). If the recording is difficult for them T may give the SS the scripts.

Post-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide fluency speaking practice within the context of the listening exercise

T asks SS to answer the following statement in pairs (PW): 1. Do you agree that Mandarin language is the language of the Future? Why? 2. Which foreign languages do children in your country learn at school? 3. Which languages should children be taught at schools, in your opinion? Why? As content FB T might ask some SS from the class to answer the questions

Productive Task (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target speaking skills within the context of the listening

T elicits European languages and Mandarin and puts them on the WB, T divides the SS into two groups and asks each group to provide 5 advantages and 5 disadvantages for children at school of learning a European language and Mandarin language. SS work in groups/pairs (GW/PW). Then T changes pairs, SS from one group should persuade the SS from the other group that their language should be taught at school. Content FB: asks the SS if they could manage to make anybody form the other group to change their opinion. Language FB: error correction.
