Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of the use of the present continuous tense to talk about things happening now and around now in the context of weddings

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give sts semi-controlled speaking practice to develop their spoken accuracy.


Warmer (3-5 minutes) • to get sts elicit the present continuous in order to analyse the language through the model sentences

Teacher puts the students into groups and give them jumbled sentences from the text. Sts race to unjumble and get the teacher write the sentences on the WB.

Focus on the meaning and use (10-15 minutes) • to focus on the meaning and the use of the present continuous tense

Teacher gets the students to tell what the tenses are, gets students to tell him/her what the difference in meaning is between present continuous and present simple. Teacher also gets students to tell about the state verbs and gets them to tell the form of the present continuous.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • to check sts' understanding

Teacher gets sts to do exercise 2 in pairs and gets WC FB to check answers.

Semi-Controlled speaking practice (7-10 minutes) • to spot the differences by using present continuous

Teacher does the practice activity with the aid of the handouts. Sts describe the picture by using the present continuous tense. Dividing the class into pairs, teacher decides who's A and B. Hand out picture 1 to student As, picture 2 to student Bs. Emphasize that students must keep their pictures secret from each other. Students now talk together and describe what people are doing and note down the differences. Teacher does a worked example in front of the class before the whole class does the task. At the end, take oal feedback on the differences, taking the chance to correct any errors with present continuous tense.
