Main Aims

  • To give practice of responding to requests in the context of writing informal e-mails.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of future forms in the context of promises and plans. To provide practice of phrases used in e-mails.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will focus on pictures of three persons with laptops of their own. They will try to guess the context. I will try to elicit information by asking questions like "What do you see in these pictures?", "What are these people doing?" Then, they will discuss the questions in the coursebook in pairs. I will take some general feedback.

Highlights (8-9 minutes) • To teach Ss the expressions (making offers and promises) used in the e-mails.

In this stage, they will read the emails from Kyoko, Maya and Melissa. We will focus on the expressions used in the emails which explaining how to make offers and promises in letters or emails and referring back in emails or letters. I will provide them with the meanings of these expressions and make them practice (with the matching exercise in ex. 2).

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To check their understanding of the expressions in the exercise

Ss work individually to match the expressions and the emails in ex.2. They check in pairs before putting their answers on the board. I will write answers on a piece of paper so that they can find the correct one and stick it on its right place on the board.

Language (8-9 minutes) • To practice language by writing practice and pair work

Ss practice the language using ex.3a and ex. 3b. They prepare the requests individually and answer other Ss's requests. I will monitor and help the Ss during the activity by taking general feedback and addressing problems.

Semi controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To make the Ss use expressions they have learned during the lesson and prepare them for the next activity.

Ss will work in pairs or small groups to discuss the situations in 4a and brainstorm ideas. I will monitör and helpthem, when necessary.

Production (8-10 minutes) • To make them use the new expressions in their own sentences, and check their use of expressions.

Ss use their ideas to write an email to a new partner as in ex.4b. I will give them a time limit to ensure all Ss are working at the same pace. I will monitor and check their use of the new expressions. When Ss are ready, they will exchange emails and read and reply to their partner's email. Then give each pair's email to another pair. They will do ex.5. And I will take general feedback.

Problems and Solutions (5-5 minutes) • To be aware of the possible problems and solutions

Ss will read and exchange again, giving explanations for what has/has not happened. I will give a time limit at this stage. Because the activity may last longer. I will make sure that all Ss exchange their e mails at the same time to avoid CM problems.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students production and use of language

If there is enough time, I will do some delayed error correction on the language from the lessons.
