Across Cultures Saying No- In this lesson, the students will learn how to say no politely in English language and culture by simply observing two foreign cultures, British and Brazilian, through a series of listening exercises.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and inference listening practice using a text about the importance of saying no politely in English language and culture in the context of culture

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of how to say no politely in English language

Procedure

warmer/lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will set the following context: I do not know how to say no to my Mongolian friend's wedding invitation. I will ask the students to help me and give me some advice

Exposure of the functional language (10-15 minutes) • to provide context for the target language through listening exercise

Through the exercises 1-a/b and 2 the Ss will understand how problematic can saying no be in different cultures. The Ss will answer the 1b in PW but will answer question/ exercise 2 individually. ex 1-a/b pw ex 2 Cw

Highlighting (5-8 minutes) • to draw students' attention to the target language

Through exercise 3, I will try to make the Ss understand the new set of phrases on how to say no politely - However, we feel that.., I am afraid I can't.., That's a great, idea, but.., Sorry, I'd love to.., Actually.., Unfortunately.. Exercise 3 will be a PW exercise, though the correction phase will be held by the entire class

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will use exercise 4 to focus Ss to think of ways to reject offers politely. They will first work individually, then in pairs. Will leave time for further class discussion to check whether the subject is clearly understood or not.
