Procedure

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Remind Ss about Kath from previous lesson. Recap why she decided to live on £1 a day. Ss in pairs/groups discuss the answers to the following questions: How did she save money? Did she buy the wedding present? How did the experience change her? Take some general FB and get some ideas to the w/b

While-Reading #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Focus Ss on the text and questions. Ask them to read the text, answer the questions and find out if their guesses were correct. Set a time limit of 1 min (2 mins if they group turns out to be weak). Ss read. Ss peer-check and discuss their answers Take w/c FB. What were the answers to the questions? How close were their guesses.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed reading task

Tell Ss to turn the text face down and focus them on the questions in ex2. Check Ss know the meaning of "chicken carcass". Ss in pairs/groups discuss what they can remember. Ss read again more slowly and check their answers. Ss peer-check with other groups. Take w/c FB and deal with any questions.

Post-Reading / Speaking (10-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned. To provide Ss with practice in speaking for fluency

Regroup Ss. Focus Ss on ex 3. Ask them if they think Kath enjoyed the experience and if they would like to try something similar - why/why not? If they know anyone who has done anything similar. How easy it would be to do something similar. Ss discuss questions. Monitor and listen for anything interesting and errors with language from previous lesson. Take w/c FB on their ideas. If needed, do some delayed error correction.

Post-reading 2 - Lexis (8-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the multi-word verbs and focus on meaning.

Ask Ss if they can remember what Kath did when she saw coins in the street. Elicit that she picked them up. Highlight the multi-word verb. Ask Ss to match the half cut-up sentences to recall other things Kath did. Ss work in pairs to match the sentence halves and stick them on the walls. Ss peer-check other groups' work. Ss check with answer keys. Concept check meaning. Drill

Controlled and freer practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check further and provide freer practice of the TL and some personalisation.

Focus Ss on the gaps in the questions. Ss work together to fill in the gaps with the multi-word verbs. Monitor and help where necessary. Take note of the ones they are having a problem. Confirm which ones they got correct and elicit corrections to the ones they didn't. Drill some of the questions. Get Ss to stand up and discuss the questions with different people. Monitor and take notes of any errors, interesting points. Take general FB and if needed deal with any errors.
