Tp 8 - Comparatives and superlatives
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson the students will learn about comparatives and superlatives through a PPP structured lesson in the context of the world and languages. I will present the language using a traditional story from my own culture and then move onto some practice and later production.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of comparatives and superlatives in the context of the world and languages.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of comparing cultures and languages.

Procedure

Warmer/lead in and Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation and to expose the ss to the target language

This activity will be like a standard pub quiz about very general knowledge asking questions such as 'what is the highest mountain in the world?'. The ss will know the answers but the difficulty will be in understanding the TL of comparatives and superlatives. This way the ss will be trying to and hopefully will understand the TL without me having to tell them. After the quiz I will give them the answer key to look at and discuss in their pairs.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will elicit four sentences from the quiz using each of the four forms 'er', 'more than', 'est' and 'the most' to the board and try to elicit from the ss the basic meaning of the sentences.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will then clarify the meaning by asking the students CCQ's to clarify the meaning. I will then elicit the four different forms from the students. I will then move on to pronunciation bringing their attention to the difficult sound for all turkish leaners /ð/. After we have drilled this particularily hard sound we will do some backchain drilling of each sentences bringing their attention to the use of the new phoneme we worked on by highlighting it in the sentences. I will attempt to do a substitution drill with the students.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will now give the students a gap fill HO to complete on their own focusing on our context of world and languages. Once the ss are finished I will get them to discuss their answers in pairs and then give them an answer key and some more time to discuss their answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In this exercise the ss are given a box with some adjectives in it and 12 different nouns. The ss are to compare the nouns using the adjectives from the box. I will demonstrate the activity with the ss and then put them into pairs to create sentences and give eachother their opinions on the topics. I will walk around the room monitoring and writing down any errors I hear. After I feel the students have discussed enough I will put any errors I have heard on the board and elicit corrections from the ss. especially listening out for things like 'good' to 'gooder'.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this activity the ss will compare their country and culture with other countries around the world. I will put a picture of turkey and america on the board and elicit differences between the two countries and elicit these to the board. Together we will discuss one or two of these differences using comparatives and superlatives. I will then ask them to discuss, in pairs, the differences between Turkey and america using comparatives and superlatives. I will walk around monitoring the ss and write down any errors i hear eliciting them to the board after and getting the students to correct them as a class.
