upper intermediate level

This lesson is intended to promote free speaking through discussion in small groups where students should agree their ideas in order to invent a machine that could be useful for the society.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Discussions in groups in order to find out the best machine to be used by the group in the context of Discovery or invention of household machines

Subsidiary Aims

  • To allow students to use different expression and vocabulary for invention, can for ability, general use of present tense

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students to start thinking about the topic

T initiate the conversation in a free dialogue with SS by telling them we are going to talk about inventions. T might ask this question to guide SS: What is the most important invention that has changed our lives? How has the invention/machine has impacted in people's lives? Think about how practical is the machine: is it easy to use? is available for all people? Is the price affordable?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the main activity through a picture and a matching exercise

T shows the picture to student on the IWB and takes a brief feedback on the picture: This is a BIMBY, have you seen a machine like this? what can it do? do you think is useful? would you like to have a machine like this? T provides a list containing the various uses of a bimby. T guides Ss to read the list of functions of bimby and Ss check the meaning of new vocabulary.

Matching exercises (2-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target vocabulary and appropriate verbs

T distributes the hand out of the verbs and description of what bimby can do. Ss work in groups/pairs to match the verb and the appropriate description.

Free Practice: Working on the invention (10-15 minutes) • To allow SS to discuss and decide on their new invention and put it on paper and prepare themselves to explain it to others

T guides organize students in groups or pairs depending on the number of students available in the class. T guides Ss that they will work in groups to produced an important invention which will change people's lives. SS should design a machine which will be: easy to use, available to all people in the community, affordable in terms of price, durability,

Feedback: Ss present their invention to class (5-10 minutes) • To find out which invention is the best

Each group will present its own invention (the group will nominate one SS to present) and the rest of the class listens and decides which invention is the best. They should follow the criteria given in the handout and they should state why their invention should be selected the best On deciding which invention is the best they should say why they think a given invention is the best. The SS should aim at finding the best invention and comment on it. They should say why it is the best and what is wrong with the others
