TP 8: Giving Advice
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn to use "should" and "shouldn't" to give advice. the lesson starts with a visual. After briefly talking about the picture, T introduces the topic through a small written dialogue. After reading the dialogue, Sts underline the TL. Following this, students will try to figure out the grammatical rules of the TL through a guided discovery task. The lesson continues with the controlled, semi-controlled and freer practice tasks.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of should and shouldn't in the context of healthy eating

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of healthy eating.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set the context and familiarize the students with the topic.

Project a picture of an overweight person on the board and tell students that the person in the picture has a problem. instruct them to try to predict what her problem is in pairs. Try to elicit the words 'overweight', 'fit', 'wants to lose weight' and 'healthy'.

Exprosure (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for the TL in order to be able to introduce it in a meaningful context.

Distribute a copy of a dialogue to the students and instruct them to read the dialogue quickly and decide if the statement under the dialogue True or False. Let them compare their answers in pairs. Provide WC FB. Following this, instruct the students to find should and shouldn't in the dialogue and underline them.

Higlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students attention to the TL.

Show a copy of Grammar Analysis HO to the students and tell them to answer the questions on it with a partner.

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation.

Give WC feedback and correct students' errors. Elicit the form and drill the model sentences.

Controlled Activity (5-6 minutes) • To concept check the TL.

Distribute Exercise 1 to the students and instruct them to fill in the gaps should or shouldn't i. Tell them to check their answers in pairs. Project exercise one on the board and give WC feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice.

Tell the students to write sentences to give advice by using the words on Exercise 2 before distributing it to the students. Tell them to check their answers in pairs. Give WC feedback.

Freer Practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with the free practice of the TL.

Put the students into pairs. One person from each group choose a problem card and the other person choose a giving advice car. The one who has problem card tell her/his problem and the other gives advice. After a few minutes, the groups swap their role cards. Nominate some pairs to perform their dialogue on the WB
