Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about tours in the context of a perfect day out

Subsidiary Aims

  • To clarify the meaning of useful vocabulary and collocations from the text

Procedure

lead-in/warmer (5-6 minutes) • to set the context and create interest

- T asks Ss: Do you often go out for the day? Where do you usually go? where's the best place to go for a day out in your area? - After eliciting some random answers, T puts Ss in pairs and has them make a list of the five most important things for a good day out.

pre-reading (8-10 minutes) • to pre-teach blocking vocabulary

- T shows pictures related to the vocabulary to elicit the words. - T drills the vocabulary to practice the pronunciation.

While-Reading (4-5 minutes) • to skim and answer the gist question

- Ss will be given a HO including 4 short paragraphs about one-day excursions from Dublin. - Ss will be given four headings and asked to skim the text in 2 minutes and match the headings. - Ss check their answers in pairs. - T elicits the answers.

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • to scan for more specific information and comprehension

- T puts the Ss into three groups. Groups get to choose a name for their team. The names will be written on the board. - Under each group's name, eight slips of paper including comments on the excursions are put. - One student from each group is assigned to run to the board, pick on slip, and go back to the group, where they need to decide which excursion goes to which comment. - The group that finishes sooner than the others with most correct answers wins. - T asks Ss to give the answers and then asks why they have come up with those answers to make sure everyone has comprehended the text.

While-Reading (5-6 minutes) • to guess the meaning from the text

- Ss are given a HO including the definition of some words and collocations from the text. - Ss find the words/collocations corresponding the definitions in paris. - T gives FB.

Post-Reading (productive skills) (5-7 minutes) • to practice speaking for fluency

- Ss will be put into groups of three. They will be given a HO including some situations where people need to choose the best excursion to go on. - T has Ss discuss and choose the best excursion for each situation. - T asks WC for their opinions.
