Description

In this lesson, the TL which is superlatives and comparatives "more than" will be covered by reading stages ( pre-reading, while reading and post-reading). Beside this, the SS are going to learn how to read better a text by following those stages. Moreover, the students are going to have speaking activities during the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about More than one language in the context of The languages we speak.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation and comparing the ideas in the context of The language we speak

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- I am going to start eliciting some vocabulary in different languages ( Arabic, Turkish, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) I am going to ask some questions to the SS to lead in the context which is about The languages we speak.

Pre-Reading (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- I am going to pre-teach vocabulary ( first language=mother language and tongue) related to the text that they are going to read by following ECDW segments . - Then I am going to show the text's title and picture. I am going to ask some questions to the SS guess the text what it is about. - While they are guessing something, I am going to write their predictions on the board.

While-Reading (6-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist information reading task

- After they have some predictions about the text that they are going to read, I am going to give the text to the SS. - They are going to have only three minutes to check their predictions that they are true or false in the text. - Then I am going to organize the SS in pairs and they will discuss/compare their ideas. It will take around 3 minutes. - In the last step, I am going to give feedback by using their predictions on the board that I wrote in the beginning of the lesson. I am going to ask "Is this true or false?"

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

- I am going to give 6 True/False statements to the SS. - The students will read the text carefully and try to find which statement is true or false according to the text. They will have five minutes to read it. - After they finish their reading, I am going to organize the SS in pairs but with different partners and they are going to start discussing their ideas on those statements during three minutes. - I am going to give an AK so SS see the correct answers.

Post-Reading/Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- I am going to give clear and simple instructions. - Then I am going to organize to the SS in pairs and give 5 questions for each student in the pairs. (Student A: What language is spoken the most in your country?, Do you have a second language in your country?, How many languages do you speak?, Why are you learning English?, Are there any words in your language that come from other languages?What are they? Student B: How many languages do you speak? What is your favorite language?Why?, What is the strangest language in the world? What language do you want to learn?Why? How many mother language/s do you have?) - They are going to ask those different questions to each other and they are going to have conversation about The language/s we speak.

Additional Activity (0-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-The game is called " Classroom Survey" - The SS are going to work in groups of three. They are going to have an interview the two students in their group. They are going to write each partner's name at the top of the table and complete the table with their answers. - When the SS have all the answers, they are going to write sentences to compare the partners in their group. - The SS are going to use different adjectives, write three comparative sentences and three superlative
