Materials

Abc Multiple choice handout
Abc Recording 5.3. (page 38)
Abc Cuts of papers
Abc Guided Discovery

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of future with 'will' and 'be going to' and the present progressive in the context of future plans.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation about traveling in the context of future plans.

Procedure

warmer/lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set a context for the lesson and engage the students

T will motivate the students to predict about the topic of the lesson by having them listen to a recording and say whether people are talking about the past, present or future. T will write "past, present, future" on the board and have the students choose after listening.

Guided Discovery (18-22 minutes) • To guide the Ss to discover the meaning and form of the target language

T gives the Ss a handout with three sentences (taken from the recording): -Ex.1: Ss will listen to the recording and say whether these sentences are true or false, to expose them to the target language. 1- Liz is going to give the old tennis racket to Ricky. (True) 2- Ian will throw the box of toys away. (False, he won't. Liz will give them to her sister) 3- Liz and Ian are keeping the the old photos. (True). when finished, Ss will work in pairs and check their answers. Ex.2: Ss unfold the first part of the paper and match the sentences (1-3) with the uses (a-c) to have them discover the meaning of the target language. 1- we use this structure to talk about a future plan we have made before speaking. 2- we use this structure to talk about a decision at the moment of speaking (not planned). 3- we use this structure to talk about something we are sure it will happen because it has been arranged. Ss work in pairs and check their answers. T will clarify the meaning of the target language by having the students answer some concept checking questions: Ex.3: 1- In sentence (3), are they sure about keeping the old photos? (yes) 2- In sentence (2), has Ian planned for that? (No) Ha he just made the decision? (Yes) 3- In sentence (1), has Liz thought about that before? (Yes) After that, The Ss will guided to discover the three future forms, used in these sentences, by completing the forms in Ex.3. 1- Subject + be + going to + V1 2- Subject + will + V1 3- Subject + be + V (-ing) Finally, the students will listen to the recording again and try to find more examples about these forms.

Controlled practice (7-9 minutes) • To have Ss practice the target language

T will give the Ss a handout with multiple choice questions. Ss work individually to choose the correct answer. Then, Ss work in pairs to check their answers

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To provide more practice and check Ss' understanding to the target language.

T will give the students cuts of papers with activities and time expressions. Ss work in groups to pick an activity and time expression and talk about that activity choosing the orrect future form depending on the time expression he picks.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To motivate Ss to use their productive skills (speaking) to produce what they have learned during this lesson

If there is enough time, T will put the Ss in groups of three and ask each group to identify one to be a tour guide who works for a company and tell them about the places he is going to take them to if they agree. Ss will switch and go to another group in two minutes. At the end, other Ss will say which tour guide was convincing and they would go with him.
