Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Coffee in the context of Breakfast habits

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of textures and tastes in the context of breakfast habits
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in the context of breakfast habits

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show photo of your favorite place to eat. Ask students what type of restaurant they would open.

Pre-teach vocabulary (13-13 minutes) • To pre-teach vocabulary

Follow MPF. Elicit meaning of vocabulary words students will need to perform the necessary reading. Make sure to do concept checking.

Reading for Gist (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading.

Have students quickly read a restaurant review of a coffee shop. Ask students if the review is positive or negative.

Detailed Reading (7-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading.

Provide instructions to class. Perform ICQ. Students will read an article explaining how coffee is made. They will then fill in the names of the steps that go into making coffee. Students can work in pairs to fill in the worksheet.

Productive Task (8-10 minutes) • To reinforce oral fluency

Have students roleplaying the roles of barista and customer to order different types of coffee.
