Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practise the past tense of the verb be, was / were. Students will listen a quiz and then answer the questions. The TL is presented through a text. Following this, students will work through inductive analysis of meaning and form of the past tense of the verb be. Next, students will practise the pronunciation of the TL. The sub-aim of the lesson is to practise the TL in relation to the topic by the productive skill of speaking

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice to give TL through a quiz

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher sticks some pictures of the famous people on the board. T asks some questions 'Who are they' 'Do you have any idea about these people?'. After teacher elicits 'famous people' topic from the ss,they pass to another step.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T gives the book hand-outs of exercise 7.1 script and asks the students to fill out the gaps from the audio..T lets them check in pairs and gives the answers by eliciting Meaning Form Pronunciation.Teacher provides error correction.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After listening part,T shows sentences about past simple to be verb sentences taken out of a listening script.Then Teacher asks 'when do we use this to be form in the sentence? Then T shows 3 purposes ,2 are wrong and 1 is correct.Then T wants them to vote for each purposes to find out the meaning of the past simple to be verb.After Teacher elicits the meaning of past simple to be verb by using CCQ,she writes a sentence taken out of the students on the board.Then T elicits the form of the structure by using CCQ.Then,T teaches them intonation by repeating..

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher provides handouts of controlled practices. Teacher gets them to circle the correct form of the past simple verb to be.. Teacher lets them work in pairs and monitor carefully Teacher gets them to read their own answers and provides F/B whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (Jenga) (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T tells the game in detail and T also demonstrates how to play this game.Then,T divides all students into 2 groups.Each member in each group tries to take a block out by tapping the short side of it, or by pulling it out.Once s/he pulls it out,read the sentence and complete the sentence by telling the correct form of past verb to be.Then s/he places the block on the top of the tower - either facing left of the blocks, or facing down, or vice versa.They repeat steps until one group makes the Jenga Tower fall.

(Back Up) Freer Practice (Who was I ?) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T says 'Lets go to 1970s and change our identities'.T sticks the pictures of famous people on students' back.They don't know who they were.Teacher says ' walk around the class and ask each other 'who was I'.After your friend looks the picture on your back,s/he tells 'You were the 8th child of Jackson family' So you guess you were Michael Jackson in those years.
