Description

In this lesson students improve their speaking through some fluency activities. The lesson starts with a picture as a lead-in. Then students will be introduced to the collocation raise money for charity and have a short discussion as a warmer. Most of the activities today will be achieved in group work pattern. As for the sub-aim (functional language/question tag), it will be introduced to the students in a test-teach-test shape.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversations in the context of raising money for charity.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for question tag in the context of general information we need to check.

Procedure

Lead in (4-7 minutes) • To set the context and engage the students

T shows the students a picture of a famous Turkish charity organization and asks them about its job and whether it raises money through sports events. Who do we raise charity for? What are the different types of charity? *Ss have a small discussion ..T projects (Imagine you've been asked to take part in an event to raise money for charity a-cycling across Europe b-staying silent for 2 months) Which one will you choose and why?

Useful Language (4-6 minutes) • Pre-teach vocabulary

T draws Ss attention to famous British charity organizations eg A-British wheelchair B-Fare C-Sports Aid T pre-teaches some vocabulary *disabilities *equipment *financial

Semi-controlled (5-7 minutes) • Speaking for fluency

Students sit in groups of three(A,B and C), T gives them the HOs (in pages 129,131&132) and they will be given three minutes to read them and put them upside down when each student tries to remember what his/her charity was and tell the other two students about it. T monitors and offers help when needed. This stage is a preparation for the next freer task.

Freer practice (10-12 minutes) • Speaking for fluency

Students sit in groups of three. Each group will be given 100,000 Liras and as one group they will decide on what they will do with the money either give it to one charity organization or divide it between the three organizations or may be they come up with their own ideas related to charity. Ss will need to justify their decision. the final part of the activity is when a spokesperson from each group takes turn to till the whole class about the groups plan (if time allows,if it doesn't the spokesperson will just have to move table and tell another group) T monitors and collects errors.(correct the error after the activity)

Functional Language (5-7 minutes) • Test - question tag

Because it's a sudden change of the lesson mode,T writes on WB "Speaking English is always enjoyable,isn't it?" and asks them what's this? refering to the question tag. Students will be given a handout to test their knowledge of question tag. Instructions: 1-match 2-ICQs *Will u match if you are not sure? No *Will you work alone or in groups? Alone 2-Stand up,walk and ask other friends to help you with the difficult ones (I will skip this part if time says so)
