TP6: Listening lesson
Elementary level

Description

In this class, Students will practice their listening skills in a lesson about movies and books. The Sts will first be familiarized with vocabulary describing types of movies/books (which is the sub-aim of this lesson). A couple of activities around this vocabulary will warm the Sts up for the actual listening part, which is about a TV-show where contestants are asked to guess the celebrity. While listening, the Sts will be asked to do a variety of exercises, focusing primarily on listening for gist. Finally, the Sts will participate in their own celebrity game-show, where the information is provided by themselves.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about celebrities in a lesson about movies and books.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of movie and book genres.

Procedure

Warmer (3-4 minutes) • Introducing the topic and engaging the Sts

T shows a slide with pictures of several famous actors. T asks Sts what these people have in common, elicits the word 'actor' and 'actress'. T shows next slide with pictures of famous authors and elicits the word 'author'. There is no female version of 'author'. T projects the following questions on WB: 'What movie have your seen recently? What book are you reading? What movie in the cinema would you like to see?' T lets Sts discuss in pairs.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To draw Sts attention to the TL

T holds up a copy of HO1 and explains that Sts need to connect the words to the pictures. Sts are asked to work individually and check their answers in pairs. T conducts WC FB by writing the answers on the board (1 = horror, 2 = thriller, etc.). For each word, T drills the pronunciation (both chorally and individually). After drilling, T elicits the stress in each word and notes in on the WB.

Semi-controlled practice (4-6 minutes) • Concept check Sts' understanding of the TL

T instructs Sts to come up with at least 1 example for the movie types in pairs. Sts work togeter for a few minutes, T conducts WC feedback on their answers. CCQs: 'Is Star Wars a comedy? Can you give me an example of a horror movie? Is Tom & Jerry a comedy or a cartoon? In which country do Westerns usually take place? Who likes romances more, boys or girls?'

Pre-listening (2-3 minutes) • To set the context for the listening task

T shows picture of TV show on WB and elicits from Sts what it is. 'What do you call this person? (presenter) What do you call these people? (contestant)' T explains first listening activity. 'We are going to listen to a TV show. The show is called 'Author, Actor!' In this recording, the presenter will explain the rules of the game. I want you to listen and find out what the rules are.' T writes on board: 'What are the rules of the game?'

While listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide listening for gist

T plays first recording. Afterwards, Sts discuss in pairs about their answers. T elicits the rules for the TV-quiz from Sts and summarizes them on WB: - Contestants choose: Actor / Author - Presenter gives 4 clues and they guess

While listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide practice in listening for gist

T explains that Sts will listen to the actual game now. Sts have to try to guess the actor or author, just like the contestants. If they know it, they can shout the name. T plays recording. After each famous person, T pauses recording and asks if Sts know this person. If they guessed, ask what information helped them to guess. T holds up a copy of HO2 and project in on WB. Sts will listen to same recording again and underline the correct words. T distributes HO2 and aks Sts to read text and check for words they don't know. ICQs: 'What recording will we listen to? What will you do with the correct answer?' T plays recording again. Sts check their answers in pairs. T conducts WC feedback with projection on WB.

Free practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide practice using new vocabulary in theme of listening activity

T explains that Sts will play the same game as in the recording. 'I have written down some information about a famous actor'. T projects slide with information about Leonardo DiCaprio on WB and lets Sts guess who it is about. T holds up a copy of HO3. In pairs, Sts will write down 4 points of information about a famous actor or author. On HO, T has written down suggestions about what kind of information. They cannot show the other pairs who they are writing about. ICQs: 'Will you write about singers? Will you answer all the questions? How much information will you write? Will you work together or alone? Can the other Sts know who you are writing about?' T hands out HO3. T monitors Sts answers, helps where necessary. When Sts have finished, T explains that pairs will stand up 1 by 1 to tell the class about their famous actor/author. The other pairs have to guess who it is. When they know, the Sts can shout out their answers. T keeps track on WB. Pair that wins, gets a prize. ICQs: 'Will you tell the class the name of your famous actor/author?' When correct, they get a point.

Wrap-up (2-3 minutes) • To ensure that the lesson's aims have been understood

T asks CCQs. 'What new words did we learn today? (Types of movies/books)' POTENTIAL: Is Star Wars a comedy? (No, Science Fiction) Can you give me an example of a horror movie? (The Silence of the Lambs) Is Tom & Jerry a comedy or a cartoon? (Cartoon) In which country do Westerns usually take place? (United States) Who likes romances more, boys or girls? (Girls)
