Description

In this lesson, students will practice their listening skills through listening to a conversation between two friends who are talking about their cross Canada trip. Students will put the photos of the trip in the correct order after listening for only one time to practice listening for gist. And then they will listen again and tick the expressions and words they hear to practice listening for details. After that they will discuss some questions that falls into the same context to practice their speaking skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about a trip to Canada in the context of holidays and weather.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide conversation fluency speaking practice in the context of holidays and weather.

Procedure

Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T talks about her birthday, what's the weather like in this day and what's her favorite/ least favorite weather. Activity 1- HO1: - T asks Sts to work in pairs and take turns to ask each others the following questions: 1. What' the weather usually like on you birthday? 2. What's your favorite weather? 3. What weather don't you like? - Activity 2- HO2: - T projects the weather map of Canada, and asks Sts to complete the sentences with the names of the cities. - Sts check answers with a partner. - Sts listen to the weather forecast recording to check their answers.

Pre- Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- T gives Sts HO3 (matching exercise) and asks them to match each word with the correct meaning. Sts do the matching exercise individually at first and after that they compare answer with a partner. T conducts brief feedback and drills only the hard words. T may ask concept checking questions.

While- Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

- T gives Sts HO4 (photos of the trip) and instructs Sts to focus on the recording because they will only listen once. T may asks ICQs to make sure Sts understand instructions: 1. Are we going to play the recording again? (No) 2. Are you going to order photos after listening? (No, while listening) 3. Are you going to work individually? (Yes) Sts check answers with other partners/ small groups. A WC brief feedback will be conducted by T.

While-Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

- T gives Sts HO5 and explains that they are going to listen to the text again and put the events in the correct order. T gives sts a little time to read through HO5. T instructs Sts to work individually. When Sts are ready, T plays the recording and monitors Sts to make sure they are on task. (T may plays the recording again as needed). Sts check discuss their answers with a partner first before a WC feedback.

Post- Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T Tells Sts about what her interests: - I like beaches. - I don't like high places. - I like museums - I like to try new things - I like sunny weather - I like to attend concerts. and asks them to plan a cross turkey trip for her. Sts work in groups to plan and after they finish, they will tell T about their plans
