Description

Getting Together

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about getting together in the context of the 21st century

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of getting together

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set the lesson context of modern getting together and engage students

Arrange people in pairs. This is important because they will have this partner for most of the lesson! 4 pictures are on the wall. They are 4 examples of ways that people 'get together.' What does 'get together' mean? What is 'a get together'? CCQ Look at the pictures, and talk to your partner about what these pictures might represent - how are these people getting together? You will have 1 minute to talk to your partner at each picture. Switch to a new picture when I say to. ICQs T monitors FB - Each group tell T in one sentence how their pictures might show getting together.

While-Reading #1 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Now, staying at that picture, each pair will skim the reading under that picture and answer these two questions: 1. How did the people get together? 2. What kind of people is this way suitable for? ICQs After one minute, Ss will stop, peer check and then switch to the parallel picture (romantic / friendship). After reading the parallel text for 1 minute, Ss again consult and may return to their seats. T monitors throughout making sure that the Ss are staying on task and switching to the new text when appropriate. After Ss have finished reading, WC FB regarding the two questions - checking with each group that read the text - with justification.

Pre-Reading (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Give the students the mini-dictionary, tell them they may use it if they need it during the reading.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Ss read the text again. (3 min) They will discuss a set of questions specific to their text, with their partner. (5 min) T monitors and moves the lesson forward at the appropriate times. Then, they will split within their larger group and each person will explain their text in more detail to their new partner. They should explain their topic to their partner in two parts: 1.What is it? 2. How does/did it work? (It is possible that at this point they will want to look at their text again; if so, they can have another 1-2 minutes depending on how definite their response about needing it was.)

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to speak about 'getting together' and expand on what they've considered

There are 4 sets of questions here that correspond to the 4 texts. Ss now discuss these questions with their partners, then switch to new partners as they finish, staying within their general group if possible. T monitors and collects errors for error correction.

Flexi-stage (3-5 minutes) • To continue Ss speaking practice if there is extra time

The Ss will talk about what 'getting-together' looks like in Turkey. 1. If they wanted to meet new friends, where would they go? 2. If they wanted to find a spouse, what would they do?
