Summer holiday
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the students will learn how to explain their holiday plans by using three types of future forms, present progressive (continuous), going to future (going to + infinitive), and will + infinitive. Students will have done a reading activity before the lesson and become familiar with vocabulary as well as the main topic in this lesson (future forms). In this lesson, students will do a gap-fill activity to practice form (as a controlled practice), then semi-practice by playing a game and at the end of the lesson, the students will do a freer practice discussing plans for the day in the context of holidays. In this lesson, the students will also repeat some vocabulary learnt in the previous lesson by playing a game.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce, provide and practice three future forms (tenses)- present continuous for the future, will future and going to future in the context of summer holidays

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice target language (future forms) in the context of holidays by playing a game and doing a freer practice (speaking of a day plans in a context of holidays)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T announces she's going on holiday and invites students to go with her- T puts a nice photo on the BW (palm beach) -T elicits from the students what they want to do on holiday (asking: 'What shall we do on our holiday?')- Ss think in groups before they give the information to the T -T also asks Ss what they need to do to get there (elicit the plan, no definite plans and arrangements once the plans are under go)- GW again

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases and introduce the future forms that will be practiced in this lesson (going to future, present continuous and will future)

-T writes on the board the advice Ss give her about the holiday -Ss are shown additional vocabulary which they need to match to the pictures on the wall (vocabulary taken from reading and speaking activity in Straightforward Intermediate, p 56, 57, 127,129, 134) -T highlight the pronunciation of 'wander' and 'beach' and 'hire' -Ss are given the vocabulary (a handout) -drilling -Ss are given a little part of the previous lesson's reading text (Straightforward Intermediate, p 56) where they need to decide whether each statement (verb form-future tenses) describes an intention, suggests that no definite plans have been made yet, or suggests that a firm arrangement has already been made- GW -T then asks S what those things are (whether plans, not definite plans or arrangements) -Ss decide in groups -Using CCQs for the statements given, T focuses on the meaning and by having Ss underlining the form on the form as well

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice future forms by using controlled practice -deleting the wrong option

-Ss are given a grammar (future forms) an exercise (Straightforward Intermediate, p 57) where they need to cross out the wrong option- PW- they read to each other -peer-check- GW - the answers are on the back of the worksheet -Ss check in pairs -T asks why there's "we'll decide" and not "we're going to decide"- T checks with WC

Language practice - semi controlled activity (6-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice and use the future forms and vocabulary introduced in the lesson

-Everyone is going somewhere- Ss choose and envelope - each represents a different place - Ss are given pictures (nouns) and word (verbs) and they turn them over (face-down) -Ss roll the dye and if numbers 1-2-3, then they turn over the verbs and if numbers 4-5-6, they turn over the nouns and use future forms (their choice) and explain what they are going to do, will do, or are doing shortly in the future. -Ss take turns -T monitors -T writes the wrong language on the WB -Ss need to correct -Feedback-WC

Language practice - freer practice (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to practice the target language in the context of the lesson (holidays)

-Ss work in groups and pretend they're in a hotel somewhere (on holidays) and are sharing a breakfast table with each other -Ss need to find out what each other's plans are for that day -T monitors and writes the wrong sentences produced during the practice on the WB -Ss correct
