TP 5: Household Chores

Description

In this lesson, Sts are going to review and practice the vocab related to household chores. The lesson begins with a group activity which is designed to reveal students' prior knowledge. It continues with the elicitation and clarification of the TL. After this, sts will practice the TL through controlled and freer activities.

Abc Exercise 2( Listening task)

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of collocations for household chores in the context of 'Do the Housework'

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information and gist listening practice using a text about collocations for household chores in the context of 'Do the Housework'

Procedure

Warm-up/ Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set the context and reveal the Sts' prior knowledge.

After telling a personal anecdote about household chores try to elicit the word ' housework'. Following this, project a picture of a house which is divided into four rooms. Put the students into groups of 3 and instruct them to think of three jobs to do in each room. At the end of this activity sts are instructed to tell the class their opinions. Sts hang their posters( three jobs to do in each room) on the wall.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To provide clarification of the TL

Project the pictures which describe a household chore on the WB and try to elicit the vocab. Concept check the meaning of the new word. Provide a oral model of the word and then drill the words with the sts. finally write the word on the board and clarify the form. After doing the same things for each word move to next part.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check the TL.

Insruct sts to match the phrases to the pictures individually( Exercise 1). tell them to pair check their answers after giving them 2 minutes to work individually. Provide WC feedback.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide Sts with practice of TL through a listening for specific information task.

Set the task by asking the following question' Who generally does the housework in Turkey, men or women?' After eliciting a few answers from the students distribute Exercise 2 and give sts some time to read the task. Instruct them to listen to the track to find out which person does each of the jobs. Tell them to check their answers in pairs and if they still have an unanswered question let them listen to the recording one more time. Give WC feedback.

Controlled Practice( Extra) (2-3 minutes) • If students keep producing incorrect collocations, I will give this task to correct their errors.

Distribute Exercise 3 which involves collocation grids and tell them to complete it individually. let them check their answers in pairs first and then give WC feedback.

Freer activity (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with the free practice of the TL.

Distribute Exercise 1 and explain the students mingle to ask each other questions by using the phrases on Exercise 1. Demonstrate the first example. Nominate a few students to share their chat with the whole class.
