Description

In this lesson, the ss will be learning vocabulary about foods, to discriminate between healthy & unhealthy foods and what foods contain; e.g. vitamins, minerals...etc. A reading piece on facts and myths about foods will be given after eliciting from the students their ideas on healthy eating. The lesson ends with a freer exercise where the ss personalize on their favorite foods.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of healthy/unhealthy food lexis in the context of food

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide reading practice using a text about "Food: Facts and myth" in the context of general ideas on healthy eating.

Procedure

Lead In / Warm Up (3-4 minutes) • To get the Ss familiar with the context

T shows some realia to the Ss and tries to get the vocabulary that they already know on the subject. Through OHP, some pictures are also shared where healthy vs unhealthy food is elicited from the Ss as the slides pass.

Teach vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To introduce food lexis to the Ss and healthy/unhealthy

Self prepared food vocabulary is given with the stress of the words written on the WB and the concepts fact and myth are also taught. The Ss will work in pairs to complete the 1st and the 2nd exercise of the HO.

Pre-Reading Task (4-6 minutes) • To check with the Ss the general knowledge on some sentences related to foods

The Ss complete the exercise from the HO with their previous knowledge on the subject. After they individually complete the exercise they check in pairs to see if their answers overlap.

Reading for gist (4-6 minutes) • To predict which statement matches the paragraph through skimming

Ss will skim read the text on Food: Facts or Myth and try to ppredict which sentence should be the first in each paragraph. After that in Groups check the replies of each other and discuss.

Reading for comprehension (7-8 minutes) • To practice with the Ss the receptive skill reading for details

The text is read for the second time for comprehension and to understand the text fully, to see if their predicted answers were the correct ones. In pairs, they check how many answers were correct.

Post-up Reading (4-5 minutes) • Freer exercise where ss personalize the context and discuss if same or different within GW

The Ss write their favorite foods on a blank paper in 2 minutes and after they are finished, T asks them to go to the correct corners for their favorite food: Proteins, Carbohydrates, Vitamin-Minerals or Other. The Ss in each group mingle and discuss among themselves why they have chosen this food, within the concept of healthy/unhealthy.

Close Up (3-4 minutes) • Word search puzzle to go over vocabulary

T gives the Ss a word search puzzle for the food vocabulary discussed within the lesson. The Ss will work in groups when completing the puzzle.This practice will help go over the spelling of the lexis learnt. There is a small prize at the end...
