Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about problems with phone and phone bills in the context of Complaining

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of guessing new words from context through group discussion .

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and elicit the main topic of the lesson which is Telephone bills

T greets Ss and ask them about their weekend. T asks Ss to stand up and make a big circle . T shows Ss an envelope and shows them what is written on it (Today's lesson is.... ) and make facial expression to arouse Ss's interest to know the main topic of the lesson . T asks Ss to open the envelope and see what is inside . T whispers (what do you think it is ?) to the student next to her (Mujgan= I assume that she will get the answer because she is one of the smart students ) and ask her to whisper her answer to the person next to her until it reaches the last person who will be next to the teacher on the other said. T then will ask the last person to say what he/she heard. If the same sentence/words were produced .( Telephone bills ) then main aim of the game will be successfully achieved.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T asks Ss to sit down and look at the picture and elicit the word ( complain ) what do you think he will do , will he (T elicits complain) If Ss didn't get the answer I will put it in a context to clarify it (yesterday I had dinner at the restaurant but the food was bad , I wanted to complain so I made a complaint ) T asks Ss some CCQs Did I like the food ? (no) what did I do ? (complain / made a complaint ) T writes the word on the board (when you want to complain /kəmˈpleɪn/ (V) you make a complaint (N) T drills the word with the class T puts Ss in groups of three . T shows Ss HOs that contain three pictures. T tries to elicit the answers from the Ss. What is going on in the pictures ? Are they happy ? T gives Ss the Hos and ask them to guess ? 1.who are they? 2. what is each person unhappy about ? T Ss work T monitors Ss share some interesting guesses with the class.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks Ss to listen and answer the question and see if their guesses were true? T plays the recording and pauses after each conversation . T asks Ss to check their answers after each conversation T provide Ss with an answer key .

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

T shows Ss the Hos and ask them to try to match the sentences to the person who said them by writing the first letter of his/her name next to the sentences . Ss work. T monitors. T tells Ss to listen to each conversation and check their answers. T asks Ss to check together. T monitors and decides whether or not an open class feedback is needed.

Post_Listening (2-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T puts Ss in pairs and give them Ho that contains words/phrases from the recording that they have listened to during the while listening stage and ask them to discuss and decide what the words/phrases mean from the context. and then match the words/phrases with thier meaning A or B.

If time allows (2-3 minutes) • To give students an opportunity to react to the content of the text that they have listened to .

T asks Ss to discuss two questions ? Have you ever complained about anything you have bought ? if so what happened ?
