Description

In this lesson, students learn frequency adverbs and expressions. They will also have the chance to practice speaking for accuracy at the end of the lesson to improve their oral accuracy. The lesson starts with 'getting to know you' game and then elicitation for the vocabulary from the previous lesson. Students will also be given a guided discovery HO to analyze the grammar for themselves. Moreover, there will be controlled and semi-controlled practice of the TL.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warm-up (3-4 minutes) • To establish good rapport with the Sts before the lesson and to get to know to the teacher

T draws a star on the WB that includes specific details. T asks the Sts to ask him yes/no questions to find out what these detail represents.

Set the context (5-6 minutes) • To link this lesson to the previous lesson and keep the same context

T uses Visuals to elicit phrases about housework from the previous lesson. And then, he divides Sts into 3 or 4 groups and gives a student from each group a piece of paper that on which is written a housework phrase, each student will have to mime it to his friends.

First Test Stage (3-4 minutes) • To have an idea about what the students already know

T gives Sts a HO which contains two tasks. The first task is to read all the frequency adverbs and expressions in the box and asks them to tick the words that they know, circle they words that they think they know and cross out any words they don't know. The second task, they are given a frequency chart and they tick the number of boxes to find out which word expresses something happens more often.

Teach - Guided Discovery (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback and also to elicit answers from the Sts. To provide student-centered activities to analyze the TL for themselves.

At first, T conducts an open class feedback for the tasks in the previous stage and then he gives the Sts a guided discovery HO to give them a chance to analyze the TL for themselves to clarify meaning and form.

Drilling (1-2 minutes) • To drill the target language chorally and individually

T drills the model language written on the WB chorally and individually to provide Sts with the correct pronunciation of the TL.

Second Test Stage (4-5 minutes) • To provide practice of the TL top assess what the Sts have learnt

Sts are given a HO which contains a gap-filling task. T asks the Sts to read the sentences and fill in the gaps using the words in brackets. T answers the first one as an example to demonstrate the task. T asks Sts to check in pairs and then conducts feedback.

Concept Checking (1-2 minutes) • To check Sts understand the meaning and form of the TL

T asks Sts CCQs to check Sts understanding of the TL. For example: 1 - Do the frequency adverbs go before verb 'be'? (No, after verb 'be'). 2 - Do the frequency adverbs go after other verbs? (No, before other verbs). 3 - Do frequency expressions go in the middle of the sentence or at the end of the sentence? (At the end of the sentence). 4 - Does 'twice a week' mean one time or two times a week? (Two times). 5 - Does 'once a year' mean one time or two times a year? (One time).

Controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide Sts with practice of the TL

T gives Sts a HO contains two tasks. The first task is to put a frequency adverb in the sentences so that they are true for them and the second task is to rewrite using the frequency expressions from the box. T monitors to make sure Sts are on the task and make micro-teaching where it is necessary. T asks Sts to check in pairs and then proved an open class feedback.

Semi-controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide Sts with practice of the TL in a bit freer range and to practice speaking for accuracy

T asks Sts to choose two sentences from the first task and two sentences from the second task on the HO that they used in the previous stage. Then, T asks Sts to write 3 or 4 questions with 'How often'. For example, 'How often do watch English films?'. T monitors to make sure Sts are on the task and make micro-teaching where it is necessary. T asks Sts to work in pairs and ask and answer the questions and try to find any similarities.
