TP 7 - Inoue Daisuke and Jonathan Ive Reading
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will split into two groups. One will read about Inoue Daisuke, inventor of karaoke, and the other will read about Jonathan Ive, inventor of the iPod. The groups will read for gist and examine lexis in the articles, creating a summary to share with the other group at the end of the class.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about two socially influential inventors in the context of short, biographical articles.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of lexis about technological inventions in the context of articles about two inventors.

Procedure

Karaoke and iPod Experience (3-5 minutes) • To engage Ss top-down processing for the reading activities

- Ask Ss about their experience with karaoke and iPods.

Pre-Reading Vocabulary Game (14-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make the vocabulary accessible

- Ss get into two groups. Each group gets three large cards, "a," "b," and "c." One person in each group is designated as the card holder. - Names of groups on the board, tallies underneath them. Powerpoint slides show multiple choice vocabulary questions. The first group to hold up the correct answer gets the point.

Reading for Gist - Paragraph Titles (4-6 minutes) • To provide Ss with a gist listening task to introduce them to the text

- Instruct Ss to find the best title for each paragraph. Give Ss in one group the Karaoke text, and the other group the iPod text. - Ss read for gist, and match the title to the correct paragraph. - Check with the others in the group.

Reading for Detail - Paragraph Summaries (12-13 minutes) • To provide students with a more detailed reading task

- Assign each student a paragraph (or two, depending on group sizes). - Ask Ss to complete the summary for that paragraph, then share with the other members of the group.

Post-Reading - Share with the Class (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to summarize and compare their articles

- Ask the groups to summarize their articles for each other. - Put post-reading questions on the board, answer them as a group.
