MATTHEW CATES MATTHEW CATES

Cates: TP7 - Hope, Dreams, etc.
Intermediate level

Description

The topic revolves around Ss hopes, dreams, and ambitions. It will incorporate listening and speaking activities, as well as some small bit of writing and focus on stressed syllables.

Materials

Abc Sentence part matching

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for specific information and deduction

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide limited practice constructing sentences related to topic

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll ask them their opinions of Inoue Daisuke's future plans (from reading in lesson prior to mine). Then I'll put up pics of 3 persons (Onur, inci, and Turan) and ask Ss what they think the interests of the persons in the pics are. For example, Turan is holding a guitar, he's probably interested in music. I'll play the first audio file (or read it myself) and then ask them to pick which person goes along with each clip.

Exposure (10-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Now I'll ask them to listen again carefully. I'll show them a handout and tell them to match parts of sentences to each other, based on what they hear from each audio clip. After, they'll peer check in pairs. Then we'll do a quick WC review.

Task (8-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice sub-aim productive writing skills

Ss will now be shown the handout again, focusing on the highlighted expressions. Now Ss will be given a handout pre-filled with above referenced expressions, and they'll need to complete the sentences with their own hopes, dreams, and ambitions.

Language Analysis (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the pronunciation and syllable stress of the task language

I'll ask Ss to look again at their completed sentence part matching paper, then listen to the audio clip. They will listen this time for stressed syllables. Now I'll model an example then ask them to circle the stressed words as they listen to the rest of the audio file. When done we'll review in different pairs. Next we'll practice saying the sentences and I'll drill a bit with mumbling.

Language Practice (6-6 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

I'll put Ss into small groups so they can discuss their own hopes, dreams, and ambitions. They should also answer if they have a plan to complete their dreams. If they wish, Ss can use their own 'finish the sentence' paper.

Review and Wrap-Up (6-6 minutes) • To finish with practice of speaking skills using target vocabulary

For the remainder of the lesson Ss will share something about their partners from the group discussion, in terms of what their classmates wish to do in the future. We'll review and make any correction to pronunciation or syllable stress. I'll close by telling WC my own ambition--to become a teacher!
