Description

In this lesson we practice some early moments of the course and make sure that we have some basis for assumptions about what the class can do. It also explores what there is in the supplementary materials and extra activities, which can be used for practice and diagnostic testing. The second part has the proper shape of a reading lesson.

Main Aims

  • To develop skills of reading for gist and detailed information

Subsidiary Aims

  • check and revision of vocabulary for the classroom
  • To provide speaking practice for introductions and for some classroom language.
  • To provide a review of past simple THEY DIDN'T in the context of describing a trip to Cairo

Procedure

realia for asking politely (4-5 minutes) • to elicit the names of objects that will be used in the next stage

T shows some things that people might ask "Can I use your....XXXX?" dictionary, pen, pencil, paper, book, T shows the thing and asks "What is this?" Answer: "it's a XXXX"

passing stuff round (6-7 minutes) • to practise asking "can I use your....?"

ss sit in a circle as near as possible in the class and then ask the question "can I use your X ?" USE - can be shown with a mime of borrowing a thing, using it and then giving it back and saying "thank you" Elicit with the first words...Can I...XXXX

classroom language (4-5 minutes) • to test ss knowledge of basic terms that might be useful in class

T explains that there is one example for each of the things at the top of the page. Check in pairs. Then feedback to whole class with projector. The idea of "sentence" is needed to play "three in a line".

Three in a line (15-17 minutes) • vocabulary from the course, attempt to make sentences.

This is a more general practice exercise. An example of the print-out activities from the Teacher's pack DVD. To be included if time permits.

Lead in (3-4 minutes) • to set the context for the video with introductions

T indicates new friends in the class and says we are meeting new friends today. Here are 3 people.

Listen and watch video (5-6 minutes) • listening for gist - identify the three people

instructions - What is his name? What is her name? Handout T plays the video check in pairs. Play again and stop to see Who is who.

Listen and watch video 2 (7-9 minutes) • listening (watching video) for detail to answer the questions about the three people

instructions - questions = 8 use the words in the box to answer. handout CAN YOU guess? do you already know? TRY Watch video Check with partners Elicit WC and Check stopping video.

prepare to speak (5-7 minutes) • students get ready to introduce themselves in the break

This should be an easy task for the group, but it may help them to make use of the break to say hello to the new TP teachers.

break - say hello to the new TP teachers • this is break time, but it's a good chance to practice introductions again.

at the end of the first 45 minutes the ss should prepare themselves to say where they are from and where they live, and ask the TP teachers the same thing if they want.

where is it (3-4 minutes) • to set the context for the reading, and generate interest in the topic

T shows slides with the projector and asks Where is it? Answer Egypt

5 things to visit (5-6 minutes) • set up the detailed reading

T tries to elicit VISIT - this is like go..but not like "go to work" every day. It's happy. Visit my friend, visit a museum, etc. Then look at the slides and find which are which in WC

What did they visit (3-4 minutes) • Reading for gist

T shows ss the text about a visit to Cairo. of the five things which did they visit? time for this is ONE minute. Hand out face down and give them a signal to start.....

questions about the day in Cairo (4-5 minutes) • detailed reading

T shows another hand out. Please answer the questions. Write the answer some details that can be answered by scanning and using more detailed reading of the text

grammar discovery table (6-7 minutes) • ss will focus on the form of the negative past simple

ss fill in a table where sentences in positive and negative are arranged.

Writing (11-15 minutes) • students use the reading text as a model and produce something about another city...

T writes on the board.... MY VISIT TO.... students suggest some other famous cities like New York, Paris, London, Rome Now you write.
