Description

This lesson will focus on vocabulary related to transportation and transportation facts. The students will be learning the different types of transport from around the world and will be discussing the different countries and what it is like to travel in them. This lesson will have mainly controlled practice but will also have a lot of pair work activities. Receptive skills will also be focused on in this lesson as students will be doing some reading activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of Transportation words in the context of travelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Transporation facts in the context of Travel in different countries

Procedure

Stage 1 (Setting the context) (5-7 minutes) • For SS to be able to fully comprehend the main focus of the lesson

- Show a large PPT picture of airport and ask some ICQ's - Where do you think this place is? - What can you buy here? - Where is the ticket desk? - Where, do you think, he will go? - Have you been here before? etc.. - Ask SS about other ways you can travel to different countries or places. - Show pictures of different parts of Turkey and ask how to get there - Have SS elicit the different types of transport and ask questions such as 'How do children get to school in Turkey?', How do people usually travel to work? etc..

Stage 2 ( Vocabulary focus) (5-8 minutes) • For SS to understand the meaning and pronunciation of different words

- Stick some pictures of the different types of transport around the room. - Group SS into groups of 3-4 - Give each group the words of the vocabulary (2-3 words per group) they will walk around the room and stick the correct word onto the correct picture - When they are finished each word will be written on the board and the stresses will be shown and drilled (words will be covered with paper as they are being drilled) - Prepositions when talking about transport will be shown here on the W/B mainly to show the differences between 'by' and 'on'

Stage 3 (Controlled practice- gap fill acitivities and spelling) (5-10 minutes) • For SS to practice the vocabulary in a more controlled way.

- SS will be given p. 28 of the workbook and will be asked to do ex. 1 and 2 (although SS have yet to be introduced to prepositions just tell them to guess as the main vocabulary is about transport and travel) - When SS have finished an answers sheet will be provided and SS may check their answers in pairs. - A gap fill activity will be handed out to the students and they will be asked to work in pairs this time. When SS are finished answer sheets will be sellotaped to the board and SS can come and check in their pairs to see how they did.

Stage 4 (Reading introduction) (5-5 minutes) • To introduce the reading activity through pictures and words related to the topic

- Show a PPT of different objects and people doing the following actions - people waiting in a queue - a crowded train - travelling fast - travelling slowly - Bad traffic - Group SS into groups of 3 and give them large sheets of paper with the above sentences written on them. - T will show one of the above pictures and SS will hold up what sentence it corresponds to. SS will simply look at each others to see if they are right or wrong

Stage 5 (scan reading practice) (5-10 minutes) • For SS to be able to comprehend the uses 'most, a lot of and not many' that was done in stage 1 of the lesson through a reading text

- Show OHP of page 43 in the book and have SS do ex. 5 on transport facts (SS will be instructed to guess which number goes where) and to do the ex individually -SS will be given a 3 minute time limit which will be displayed on the board (online timer) - When finished SS will be split into pairs and will check their answers together to see how they did. - In these same pairs SS will walk around the room to find the correct answers (which will be stuck in different parts of the room.

Stage 6 ( freer practıce game) (5-10 minutes) • To give SS more practice in pronunciation and meaning of the different vocabualry

- The 'hot seat' game - A chair will be put at the front of the room and facing away from the W/B. The T will hang a picture on the board and the SS will have to describe the picture but not tell the S what the picture is as the S in the 'hot seat' must guess from the description and concept questions Extra material: True and false sentences -SS will answer some sentences written by T about Turkey, however SS must use full sentences to answer eg. T. Most people drive small cars S. False. Most people drive big cars - When finished SS will check in pairs and discuss
