Description

In this lesson students will learn about phrases for comparing through a context of historical changes in two cities. They will listen for prediction and details related to issues brought on by historical changes in two cities. Also ss will use TL through speaking with freer practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of phrases for comparing in the context of Two cities: Hong Kong and Moscow

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of comparing two cities of Turkey: Istanbul and Bodrum
  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about historical changes in two cities in the context of Two cities: Hong Kong and Moscow

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll do a prediction activity. I'll use the OHP to show the photos of Hong Kong and Moscow.Then I'll ask them what they know about these two cities. I'll give prompt phrases on the board using OHP to make them speak.

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Before ss build up sentences about Hong Kong and Moscow, I'll give some topic related phrases that will provide them a model for the following tasks and they will have less difficulty in the following listening exercises. Later Ss will listen and check their predictions. I'll give instructions before doing the listening activity. Then they will listen for more details using the things in the box on their HOs. In pairs they are going to discuss the answers. And I'll give w/c fb.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss will do PW. They will be given phrases and prepositions on seperate sheets so learners will try to match them dealing together. After the activity and I'll elicit the meanings and give the synonyms of these phrases to make ss understand better.

Productive Task(s) (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will do freer practice through speaking activities. In the first productive activity they will work in pairs. They will discuss and compare Istanbul and Bodrum, two cities of Turkey, using the TL(phrases for comparing). If time, In the second activity, in groups of four, learners will discuss the positive (the best) changes and which are negative(the worst) changes.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

During productive activities I'll be monitoring so I'll take notes on errors and give feedback on the board after the activities finish.
