MATTHEW CATES MATTHEW CATES

Cates: TP5 - A Really Great Lesson Plan...
B1+ Intermediate level

Description

Combining frequent use Vocabulary (Place, Way, Time) with Speaking skills practice, via expression formulation using common adjectives (Good, Popular, Terrible, etc.).

Materials

Abc It's a good way...handout

Main Aims

  • To provide practice in conversational speaking, in the context of Places, Ways, Time, and Ideas

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice combining proper adjectives and nouns in order to evaluate and recommend things

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll write the lexis adjectives on one side of the board and the nouns on the other, then ask Ss to tell me if they can all go together (for example, Good + Place, Bad + Idea, Different + Time). I'll do a bit of review on Meaning and Pronunciation. Next I'd ask them what could one do with these expressions? (For example, give a recommendation or opinion?) Next I'll show them the handout and give instructions for Ex.#1. I'll pass out the handout and elicit their answers.

Exposure to Quite and Really (8-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming task

I'll model a few sample sentences using 'quite' and really,' then ask them to generate their own aloud. Next I'll ask them to work in pairs to complete Ex.#2. We will review and discuss. Time permitting I will introduce a few optional adjective terms, like 'awful,' 'fantastic,' or I'll elicit their ideas for some.

Useful Language (9-9 minutes) • To practice speaking useful language for coming productive task

I'll explain Ex.#3a then ask them to get up and mingle, and form sentences with each other. I'll monitor, then the whole class will tell me some of the sentences they created. We'll review and I'll elicit corrections as needed. Next I'll ask them to generate sentences based on Ex.#3b. (I won't do Ex.#3c)

Productive Task (10-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

For Ex.#4, I'll explain that I want them to generate real world recommendations to each other for the listed items, via standing up and mingling again. I'll give an example, such as, "Don't buy a new computer at the mall because it is quite expensive there," or "Gelik is a popular restaurant but I hear Kirkpinar is better." They can develop their sentences using extra English vocabulary as they like. I'll give them 5 or 6 minutes for this, then I'll elicit their ideas and ask for any good recommendations.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

We will write down a few examples from the previous task up on the board, and we'll review to ensure that everyone agrees the samples are correct or not correct. If not, I will elicit correction by asking Ss to come up and write the proper sentence.
