Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of place and past time expressions in the context of last week.

Procedure

Warmer (6-8 minutes) • Link the lesson to the previous lesson

T writes on the WB " Last weekend I stayed at home = I ...... at home." and try to elicit Ss answers. Then he writes "was" in a different color. T projects the pictures in page 56 ex1 on the WB and asks the Ss where the people are. T uses the pictures to present some vocabulary like at work, on holiday,on the beach(Atakoy beach) ill,on the phone, asleep,in bed ,in hospital. Ss read the email and in pairs check the names of the people in the pictures. T writes the names on the WB for feedback.

Grammar (10-12 minutes) • Introduce was/were positive and negative

EX2a page 56, Ss complete the table with was or were. T draws the table on the WB and adds the pronoun you to it. Checks with the whole class for clarification. Before Ss go to Ex2b,T writes " Hassan and Paula were at the meeting yesterday." on the WB, then replaces Hassan and Paula with the pronoun "they" . Then T re-writes the sentence "They ........ at home yesterday." to elicit "weren't" from the students. And the same with "Maria was in hospital." to elicit wasn't. Ex2b Ss fill in the gaps and check in pairs. T writes the answers on the WB for feedback.

Grammar (10-12 minutes) • Questions with was and were

Page 57 Ex1a Ss look at the picture and try to remember the names of people. (Hassan and Peter) T might need to make Ss have a quick look at the picture in page 56 as a reminder. Ex1b Ss listen to recording 2.19 to mark the sentences true or false individually and correct the false ones, then they check in pairs. T writes the answers on WB for feedback. 1-True 2-True 3-False-he was at home 4-false- he was tired. T decides according to time if the students do it or not. T writes "you were at home" on the WB and labels you as #1 and were as #2 and introduce the question form Were you at home? using #2 were and #1 you to show them how order changes to form a question. T writes "I was at home yesterday" and underlines at home, try to elicit the question "where were you yesterday?"

Practice (9-13 minutes) • Ss practice using was/were in questions and answers

Ex3 Ss re-write the questions in the correct order. T gives them number one as an example on WB. Then, they check in pairs. T gives them the answer key for feedback and monitors to discover if there is a problem. Ss mingle freely and ask each others the questions in exercise 3.
