Reading and Listening
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about different countries' everyday lives through reading and listening. The lesson starts with pre-teaching some words by using pictures, creating a story about them through eliciting. It is followed by a vocabulary activity in which students put a tick if they see the words in the pictures. The second is a speaking activity and the students compare the pictures with their own countries. This is followed by a matching activity in which the students match the opposite words before reading the text. Then the students complete the sentences in the text by using the words of the previous activity. This is followed by a listening activity in which the students put the questions in order. In the last activity, the students listen the recording one more time to answer some true/false questions. If there is extra time, the students are divided in groups and a vocabulary game is played by matching the words with the correct definitions. At the end of the activity, the early finisher is the winner.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide reading and listening skills in the context of some countries' everyday lives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce some new vocabulary of countries and their everyday lives.

Procedure

Stage 1 : Warm up/Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the text through some new vocabulary.

-T starts the lesson by telling a story and eliciting some new words by using pictures. -Before moving on the text, some new vocabulary will be introduced.

Stage 2: Getting ready for reading (12-15 minutes) • To get the students to be ready for the text through some pre-reading activities

-T demonstrates the first exercise in the students' book. Ss will put a tick on the words they see in the pictures and then whole class check. -There is a speaking activity to compare the pictures with Ss' own lives. Ss work in pairs by choosing a colourful card. Ss having the same colour will be pairs. Ss will talk about their countries' similarities or differences between the other country in the picture. -Ss will match the words with the opposites individually so as to be ready for the reading text. Answers are checked in pairs.

Stage 3: Reading the text (7-10 minutes) • To contextualize the topic and to practice reading skills

-To set the meaning first, T contextualizes the topic by showing a video about Britain. Then T asks some questions about the lives of British people. -Ss will complete the blanks (ex.4) and check in pairs. Pairs will be different as T will name Ss as "Britain, Turkey, Germany". Then whole class feedback is given. If there are some errors, I will try to use some error correction ways.

Stage 4: Getting ready for listening (3-5 minutes) • To get the students to be ready for listening through some pictures&questions around the class

-T will set the scene for Australia by using some pictures and questions around the class. Ss will work in pairs in a different way by choosing their classmates' names from the box. Whoever the student picks, she/he will work with him/her. They will try to guess which country it is by looking at the pictures and answering the questions in pairs. (Ss are around the class)

Stage 5: Listening exercise (8-10 minutes) • To improve listening skills

-T demonstrates the first listening exercise and Ss will put the questions in order after listening. They will do the exercise individually and check in pairs. -Ss will listen to the recording one more time to focus on the answers. They will write "T" for true sentences and "F" for false sentences. They will do the exercise individually and check in pairs. After answer keys are given to pairs/groups, whole class feedback is given.

Stage 6: Vocabulary Game (4-6 minutes) • To practice the new vocabulary

-If there is extra time, there will be a vocabulary game. -Ss are divided into groups. There will be four groups and the vocabulary (introduced in this lesson) cards will be given to the groups. Each group will match the correct card with its definition on the board. The early finisher will be the winner.
