Description

In this lesson, ss talk about information media. The lesson starts with discussion about information media. This is followed by reading for main idea, then reading for detail, then grammar for guessing meaning from context. Finally freer practice where learners ask and answer questions in group

Materials

Main Aims

  • Reading for gist, specific and detailed information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide ss practice in reading for gist and speaking for fluency and accuracy. Also to review/clarify and practice lexis related to talking about facts and opinions.

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To activate ss schemata and raise interest in the topic

T writes information media on the board, put ss in pairs/small groups to discuss what they know about it, then build up list of information sources on the board with the ss. Then ask which ones they trust and why. Material: HO ex.1

Reading for main idea (7 minutes) • To raise the ss knowledge of what they are about to read (their schematic knowledge) as this will help them to understand the text and also to give ss practice in reading for gist

Ss read the first sentence of the text and say what they know about wikipedia. Then they read the whole text to match the summaries to the paragraphs Ss peer check before open class feedback. Material: HO 1 ex.2

Reading for detail (10 minutes) • For student to be able to locate specific information from the text and to read for detail

Ss read the questions and find the answers in the article. Ss peer check before open class feedback. Material: HO 2 ex 3

Grammar (7 minutes) • To enable ss understand the synonyms of the meanings. To give ss practice in deducing meaning from context and to introduce some useful vocabulary

Ss find words and expressions in the article with the meaning Ss peer check before open class feedback. Material: HO 2 ex 4

Speaking for practice (10 minutes) • For ss to have free practice in speaking for accuracy and fluency

Speaking preparation: Ss read the questions and ask T about any words they are unsure about. Then they complete the questions and prepare their answers. Speaking personalisation: Ss ask and answer the questions in groups. Material: HO 2 ex.5

Feedback (6 minutes) • To make sure ss understand the whole content of the lesson

T praise ss for use of good language, give FB on what ss spoke about and correct errors made by them be it in meaning, form, pronunciation or accuracy by writing out the errors on w/b and elicit the corrections.
