Intermediate B1 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the unreal conditions 1 through guided discovery based on a reading text which they have read in the previous lesson. The lesson starts with a sentence from the text they have read in the previous lesson. Ss attention will be focused on the target language in the sentence. The Ss are asked a series of questions about its meaning and form. This is followed by controlled practice through sentence reformulation and free practice speaking activity.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice unreal conditions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy for unreal conditions

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set a context for the target language and engage the Ss

Teacher greets the class and sets the scene to start the lesson. Teacher asks the students if they remember the previous lesson about Bill Gates.Teacher elicits for some answers.

Exposure of TL-Unreal conditions (8-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language through guided discovery

Teacher sets the context of news by reminding Ss of their previous lesson about Bill Gates.Teacher tells the Ss - 'Imagine you were Bill Gates, what would you do? -Would you hit the guy? -Would you say nothing? The teacher puts them in pairs to discuss The teacher gets FB -WC and elicits the answers, asks: If I were Bill Gates I would hit the man. CCQ -Are you Bill Gates?(no) -Did you hit the guy?(no) -Is this situation real or imaginary?(imaginary) - Are you talking about past or present?(present) -is this unreal condition?(yes) The teacher says the sentence for drilling(If I were Bill Gates, I'd hit the man) - teacher asks about stress pattern -teacher writes the sentence on the board -teacher asks about parts of speech and contraction form (I would=I'd) -teacher wants them to make the sentence negative and question forms. -teacher writes the sentence on the board: If I were rich, I would help the poor I would help the poor if I were rich - teacher asks the Ss the difference between two sentences -teacher elicits the full structure of unreal conditional sentences onto the white board and show them how the clauses can switch.

Controlled practice (10-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

-teacher creates multiple choice activity that directs them to choose between real and unreal conditionals,e.g. -If I (go/went) to Istanbulnext weekend, I (will/would) visit Sultanahmet.(think as if it is imaginary) -teacher gives the students handouts- controlled exercises and want them to do by individually and check with their partners. -teacher chooses students to write the correct answers and check their answers from the board - teacher gives the students that they are going to do an exercise by writing a model sentence on the board and asks one volunteer student to come to the board and put if where necessary. Then teacher instructs the activity by telling them they should do the exercise then check with a partner and then teacher asks for feedback. -teacher writes a model sentence ( if I --------(not/be) ill, I ---------(come)with you). The teacher asks one volunteer to come to the board and writes the answer.Teacher shows the students the second handout and instructs them to do the activity check with their partners and finally teacher asks for feedback.

Semi-controlled practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

- teachers writes some questions on the W/B and wants them to discuss with their groups -teacher monitores while they are discussing and gets f/b w/c -teacher asks if they have any questions or not so far -teacher thank them and finishes the lesson
