Description

In this lesson, Ss lean about different ways to tell and ask about time. They will also learn time vocabulary.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in the context of time
  • To provide practice and clarification of asking and telling time in different ways.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using pictures in the context of time

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Use the clock to elicit the topic Give Ss ex1 and do some FB

Highlighting and Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Elicit times – step by step round the clock – do plenty of drilling paying attention to natural pron – don’t write anything yet – elicit the question - & get Ss to practice in open/closed pairs – passing the clock(s) around & moving the hands Give Ss ex 2, match words with the pictures, then they match times to the photos B-F

Exposure/Listening (7-9 minutes) • To provide context target language (time) through pictures and give practice in listening for specific information

-Focus the Ss on the pictures in ex 3. Ss do the ex, Peer check with their partners Do FB if needed -Again focus the Ss on pictures, they listen and match conversation 1-3 with A-F in ex 2a Monitor and help if needed Do some FB

Clarification (7-9 minutes) • To clarify meaning and form of TL.

Do ex 5 and elicit TL to the w/b showing when we use from, to... Teach meaning of a.m, p.m., noon, midnight

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-For ex 6 – get Ss on their own to draw hands on to 3 of the clocks on your HO to illustrate different times. The in pairs, Ss say their times to each other, listen & draw the times on to the remaining blank clocks. Monitor & check for good use of language – deal with any errors in FB at the end -Ss listen and practice the Q&A.

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide Ss into two teams – put/draw two clocks on the w/b. In turn, Ss race to set/draw the clock on the w/b that you call out.
