Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the passive form in the context of 'Mind Development'. They will also have the chance to analyse and practice the TL. In addition, they will practice the TL in speaking to develop their oral accuracy.

Procedure

Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To lead-in to the context of 'Mind'

T writes 'IQ' and asks Sts if they know what it means and what it stands for. T conducts feedback from Sts. T draws Sts attention to the IQ test in Q1 and tells them this test is the kind used in IQ tests. T asks Sts to answer the questions in the test. Then, T asks Sts to look at the back of the page to check their answers.

Context setting (2-3 minutes) • To present the TL in a text about 'Mensa'

T writes the word 'Mensa' on the WB and asks the Sts to talk in pairs and tell each other what Mensa is.

Gist task (4-6 minutes) • To give Sts an idea of what the text is about

T gives Sts the text about Mensa and asks them fold the paper first and then asks them to read the text to find out what Mensa is. T monitors and conduct feedback in an open class feedback.

Detailed task (3-5 minutes) • For the Sts to have exposure to the TL (Passive form)

T asks the Sts to read the text in again in 2 minutes and then, he asks them to unfold the paper and read the two sentences at the bottom and then Sts decide if they are true or false. Sts check in pairs and then T conducts feedback in open class feedback. Examples: 1-Members are drawn from all professions. 2-The society was founded in 1940.

Presenting the TL (6-8 minutes) • To get Sts to analyze the grammar by themselves

T gives Sts HOs with the same 2 sentences from the previous exercise written. Under the sentences, there are CCQs about the TL. Sentences: 1-Members are drawn from all professions. 2-The society was founded in 1946. Sts read the sentences and work out the grammar form and the meaning by themselves. Then, Sts highlight examples of passive form in the text. Then T drills the sentences.

Controlled practice (6-7 minutes) • To give Sts a chance to practice the TL

T points to the article about Marilyn vos Savant and tells Sts they read the article and choose the correct verb form (passive or active). Sts check in pairs and then T conducts an open class FB.

Freer practice (6-8 minutes) • To practice TL widely

T tells Sts a short story about someone in the family and then asks Sts to think of a person and then writes sentences about them using the TL.
