Description

In this lesson, the ss will be involved in a listening task in the context of 'stories from our childhood'. We will listen for first gist and then details with pre, during and post listening tasks. Our subsidiary aim is speaking in the context of childhood memories.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To begin I will warm up the ss with a story from my childhood. An unfortunate but funny story involving many wasps. This will get the students thinking about their childhoods and possibly funny or memorable experiences they have had themselves.

Pre-Listening - Predicting the listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

We will look at the pictures of Helen and Justin and try to predict what the listening is going to be about. This will be done in pairs and i will elicit from the ss afterwards.

Pre-Listening - Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To pre teach the vocabulary the students will hear in the listening

Elicit meaning from vocab cards.

While Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Students will listen once and try to guess if their predictions from the pictures were correct or not. Students will become familiar with the listening and hopefully understand the gist of the passage.

While Listening #2 (3-5 minutes) • Show understanding of new vocabulary

SS will then match the Vocab cards to pictures from previous stage in their groups (tables). w/c fb.

While-Listening #3 (5-7 minutes) • To help reinforce and help eachothers understanding

Discuss who of the two (Helen or Justin) were happier in the end and why in pairs. W/C FB.

While Listening #4 (10-12 minutes) • To practice listening for details in the passage

Make students line up - Tallest to shortest - New pairs -Give HO about Justin Listen and answer Check in pairs W/C FB -Give HO about Helen Listen and answer Check in pairs W/C FB

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will discuss with their partners a childhood experience of their own. Who had the most interesting or funniest story? and if time W/C FB - Who had the best story?
