TP2
Upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will develop their knowledge of future verb forms and Future Continuous. Sts will be able to understand, distinguish and use different forms and understand the differences in meaning and usage. First, T plays the same track Sts listened to in the previous lesson. This will set the TL in context. Then, Sts will work the analysis of meaning and form of the TL in pairs. T conducts feedback and clarification of meaning and form with CCQs and timelines. Following this, Sts will do a controlled-practice activity to build confidence. Finally, Sts will do a semi-controlled / freer practice and try not only use the TL correctly but also to explain and clarify the answers themselves.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of future verb forms, their meanings and usage.

Subsidiary Aims

  • to gain exposure to the future verb forms through auditory and written forms

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T ask Sts about their plans for the afternoon and notes the answers of Sts (if time, T will ask Sts the same question at the end of the lesson to see if Sts understand the differences in meaning and usage of future forms. For example if a student has already bought a ticket to a show, T expects him / her to use Present Continuous)

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through listening

T gives a gap-fill HO that Sts will complete while listening. As Sts have already listened the track in the previous session, T will play it only once.

Guided Discovery (10-15 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T gives a grammar analysis HO and Sts will work meaning and form with their pairs. T gives feedback after each section of the grammar analysis.

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form of the target language

T groups Sts and then gives papers which have answers of the CCQs on them. T opens the PPT with timelines and as the CCQs are asked, group members talk and raise the paper which they think the correct answer is written on. T conducts further clarification to the different forms, differences in meaning and usage if needed. ("rain" is used as a distractor)

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives the HO in which Sts need to choose the correct future verb forms from multiple choices individually. Sts check answers in pairs.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T asks students to create their own sentences with multiple options. T encourages Sts to use different forms and meanings. Once Sts write a sentence, they swap their paper with a partner who tries to complete the task. Then, Sts check their answers together and try to explain and clarify for themselves.
