Procedure

Lead-in - "Friends" Family Tree (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Greet the students and draw six blanks on the board, eliciting the topic "family" through hangman. - Affix pictures of Ross, Monica, Jack, Judy, and Ben from the TV show "Friends" to the board one by one, eliciting their relationships to each other, e.g. "Ross is Monica's brother," "Judy is Jack's wife," etc.

Pair Practice (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' level of comfort with family lexis

- Ask students to work in pairs describing the relationships of the characters on the board to one another. - Monitor, and keep students on task if necessary.

Book Work (17-20 minutes) • To give students practice reading for specific information regarding the target lexis.

- Hand out copies of face2face page 16, and ask Ss to read the text and fill in the gaps using vocabulary about the family. Monitor as Ss work by themselves. - Ss check their answers in pairs, then listen to the recording and check from that. - Ss do exercise 2, categorizing family lexis as male, female, or gender neutral. Check in pairs, then with the answer key.

My Family Tree (11-13 minutes) • Check students' use of the family lexis and possessives

- Give Ss my family tree, with the names written on one side. Ss ask simple questions such as "Who's Peter?" and I reply "He's my brother." Continue until all the blanks are filled in, making sure different Ss ask the questions. Ss check in pairs, then use the answer key. - Ss ask each other questions about my family members to practice the lexis.
