Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to talk about their hobbies based on listening, and how to differentiate nouns and verbs, as well as how to use them

Procedure

lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To engage the students to the topic

I will show students pictures through projector about music, sports and films. I will say: "I like to listen to classical music." or "I like to play tennis" I will ask the students "what about you"? I will elicit answers from the students

Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the essential words of the listening activity for hobbies.

I will pre-teach the essential words like (newspaper, magazines and band) by using google images. I will ask the students: Do you read newspaper everyday? (yes, no) Give me names of Turkish magazines. Give me a name of a music band in Turkey. I will elicit answers from students.

Listening for gist (3-5 minutes) • To focus on what they are listening and improve their receptive skills

I will give students handouts and introduce Andre with the pictures on the H/O. Ask class what he is doing. Then tell them that they will listen to Andre one time only in order to fill in the gaps. I will play recording a 1.60 one time. Students to check their answers in pairs. I will check the answers on the whiteboard using the projector while replaying the recording. I will write the verbs in a different color. I will read the verbs and students will repeat.

listening for details (5-7 minutes) • To highlight the specific details while listening to fill in the gaps

I will show the studets the handouts for exercise 1b. I will ask them to listen to the recording to complete the sentences in pairs "Listen to Andre's hobbies. Fill in the blanks" I will play recording 1.60 I will repeat the recording again because this exercise needs more than one listening so that students can write their answers. I will ask them to check their answers in pairs. I will check students' answers and see if they need any help. I will play the recording and pause on each sentence and elicit the answers from the students.

exposure of the functional langauge (5-7 minutes) • Students should know about nouns.

I will give handouts for exercise 2a to do it in pairs. Students will match the nouns with the pictures without listening to the recording. We will answer in the whole class. Then I will write and say the word 'football". I will ask students where they can hear the stress. I will elicit answers from students them I will put a circle on the stressed sound. I will tell them that they will listen to exercise 1a to the words that they match and to highlight where can hear the stress. I will ask them to check their answers in pairs. I will give students the answers on a paper.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To practise the TL

I will give students handouts for exercise 2b telling them that they will use the verbs in exercise 1a to fill in the gap. We will answer in the whole class. I will tell them that these sentences are hobbies things they like to do. I will the verbs and nouns using different colors to clarify verbs from nouns. I will tell them to stand up and make a circle and I will throw a ball to a students and say a sentence like: I read newspapers. The students will do the same.

Extra practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide to practice the target language

I will give them a handout with a table that has mixed verbs and nouns for hobbies. Students will arrange the nouns and verbs and write them down under the table. I will check students answers and correct their errors.

Speaking Extension (5-7 minutes) • To use the vocabulary in exercise 2

If I have extra time, I will write the sentence "play basketball" and add the question "Do you" so the question will be "Do you read a book?" I will write then then the answer "Yes, I play basketball" or "I don't play basketball". I will chest a handout telling them to write a question for the required hobby and then answer the answer either yes or No I will tell them to check their answers in pairs. I will monitor this activity and answer the activity with the whole class
