Description

In this lesson the students are going to listen to a conversation twice, once for a gist and second for specific details, then they will get familiar with the meaning and the form of the TL and then will practice their speaking skills and pronunciation while using the TL they have learnt

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for asking, making and responding to suggestions in the context of special days

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about getting presents in the context of birthdays
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a asking, making and responding to suggestions in the context of special days (birthdays)

Procedure

Lead-in for the listening (5 minutes) • get students interested about the topic of the conversation and the listening

Now you know more about the dates right? Now Zeki when is your birthday? are you going to have a party? now I want to go to his birthday party what do I buy? what do I get for his birthday? ( elicit present) write on the board "get a present, get=buy" what do you do when you get the present? when you buy a present? I go to his party, I GIVE it to him. what do you want for you birthday? what do you want as a present?( a book? a car? shoes?)

Listening 1 (6 minutes) • Listening for the gist

hold up the photo " Now do you remember Tanya from before? *hand in the pictures* you can see her talking to someone, who do you think he is? her husband, They are talking about their friend, Tom's birthday, listen to their conversation, what do they decide to buy? what do they decide to get for his birthday? what is the present? " play the audio "what do they decide to get for Tom's birthday?" The new Simpsons DVD is it a good present?

Listening 2 (5-6 minutes) • Listening for details

"Now listen again, fill in the gaps and complete the conversation." now check with your partner for 2 minutes hand in the answer keys

TL presentation (10 minutes) • understanding the meaning and the form of TL

look at the conversation and fill in the gaps in the table. *show* from this conversation fill in the gaps, work on your own you have 2 minutes. hand in the hand-outs write on the wb: what ..... we get him?/buy him?/give her? what is this word? drill write the heading: asking for a suggestion In the conversation Tanya is asking for Simon's suggestion. ........ get him a book/ buy him a dvd/ give her a cd. ...... about a DVD? drill He's making a suggestion and in response: that's a good... I'm not... No I don't think so drill responding to suggestion I ask for Toofan's suggestion, what shall we get Zeki for his birthday? elicit Toofan's suggestion (practice with couple of students)

Listen and practice (10-12 minutes) • students practice the TL

play the recording, pause ask the students to repeat Now in pairs practice the conversation you heard (show the conv), listen to us for example, Jelal what's the date today? April 10th, why? It's Tom's birthday tmrrw, what shall we get him?... in pairs practice the conversation from the papers until you remember it.use today's date, what's today's date? practice for 5 minutes while monitoring snatch the conversations away or ask them to turn the papers and practice the conversation. ask a pair to role-play the conversation for the others (if enough time)

freer practice and review (if there was time) (8 minutes) • check understanding/ freer practice

work in groups of four, make a list of typical birthday presents ( elicit examples) ( chocolates, a book, flowers etc.) get a piece of paper (2 minutes) choose one birthday present from your list for each student in another group, draw the present on 4 pieces of paper (1 minute) give your presents to the other group and say thank you. role-play with a student
