Main Aims

  • To give the students practice in reading for gist and reading for specific information through the context of someone's 110th birthday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will introduce myself and check if I can recall there names. I will ask the students how long the average person lives in Turkey and ask them if they know the oldest anyone has lived or is still living. I will write the title, 'Maria prepares to celebrate her 110th birthday', of the reading on the whiteboard and I will draw a birthday cake with her name and age in it. Then I will tell them that we are going to read about this person. I will ask them what her name is and how old she will be.

Preparation to read/Prediction (3-5 minutes) • To predict and prepare the reading

I will ask them how they think Maria is going to celebrate her birthday. I will put them in pairs and give them the next questions: "In what way has the world changed since she was a young girl?" and "What do you think are the changes that have shocked her the most?" They will discuss their ideas and I will take some ideas on the whiteboard. But I won't confirm or reject any ideas yet.

Reading for gist (3-8 minutes) • Gist reading to check their answers

I will tell them that they are going to read the text now, but that they don't have to read every word, that they just have to check their answers. I will give them 1 minute. Then I will give them the text, after reading they can check their answers with their partner. I will give whole class feedback.

Reading for specific information (4-8 minutes) • Remember topics of the text by putting them in the right order

I will tell the students to turn the text face down and see how much they remember about the text. I will give them exercise 3 and tell them they have to read the topics and put therm in the right order according to the text. They can now turn the text and read it again to see if their answers were correct. I will give whole class feedback and ask them if it was difficult and if they have encountered any problems.

Reading for specific information (10-15 minutes)

I will split them in 2 groups, group A and group B, they will have to work together to answer the questions from the text. I will give them exercise 4, 4 A to group A and 4 B to group B. I will monitor and help them if they need any help. afterwards I will give them the answer keys to check their answers themselves.

Semi-Controlled Speaking (3-6 minutes) • Practice target language

I will tell the students they have answered different questions and that they are going to test each other on how much they remember about the reading. They are not allowed to look at the reading text. I will regroup the students into pairs, A with B, they have to ask their own questions and answer each other's and see how much their partner remembers. I will take whole class feedback and ask them if anyone had all the answers correct.

Freer Speaking and personalisation (4 minutes) • Practice target language

Students will stay in their pairs and discuss the question in exercise 5. I will take some whole class feedback.
