Description

In this lesson students will understand how to say/call countries and nationalities.

Materials

Abc Handouts from Students' book pp9-10, Work book pp5-6, world map, photos of famous people

Main Aims

  • To present and practice 12 country names and their nationalities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To get the learners familiar with some pictures related to countries such as money, stamp and famous people.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Intruduce yourself to students and ask them one or two introductory questions, to start the lesson such as "Where is Hamburg?", "Where is Bangkok?"

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Point at some of the photos that previous teacher put aroun the room. Ask "where is s/he from?". Elicit the answer "he's from ****". Then drill the language briefly. Ask the students to go around the room in pairs, they look at the photos and ask the same question to each other.

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Drill the language in p9 ex2. The students will have the page, ask them to use the language in pairs and point at pictures of people at the top of the page.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ask students about cities -where's Ankara, where's Paris.Elicit the responses, "Ankara's in Turkey, Paris is the Capital of France". Or "I don't know". Use the world map to clarify. Drill, and then show them the sentences on page 9 ex 3.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Go to the students book page 10. Ask the students to match the country to the nationality. Drill the words, correct stress on the words.
