In this lesson, Sts will develop scanning and comprehension skills in reading. They will also review lexis related to feelings and opinions from the previous lesson.

Procedure

Introduction (1-2 minutes) • To introduce myself to Sts.

T talks about himself a little bit to introduce himself to the Sts.

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To give Sts a chance to share their feelings about Istanbul.

T tells Sts that it is his first time in Istanbul and he would like them to tell him how it feels to live in Istanbul. T gets Sts to work in pairs and asks them to share their feelings about Istanbul.

Presenting the topic (2-3 minutes) • To give Sts an idea about what the topic will be about and also a chance to share ideas.

T shows Sts a photo of Mexico City and asks them to discuss in pairs where they think it is, what kind of place they think it is and share any ideas they know about this place.

Feedback (1-2 minutes) • To elicits ideas from Sts about the photo

T elicits some ideas about the photo in an open class feedback.

Presenting the main aim of the lesson (1-2 minutes) • To give Sts an idea about scanning and comprehension skills of reading.

T asks Sts how would they read a question in an exam? And how would they read a restaurant menu?

Eliciting vocabulary (2-3 minutes) • To make sure Sts are on the right track

T elicits some words and the meaning of the vocabulary and feelings.

Practicing the main aim of the lesson (2-4 minutes) • To give Sts a chance to practice scan reading.

T points to the text about Mexico City and asks Sts to quickly read it and highlight examples of the vocabulary and make a note of the thing that the adjectives describe.

Pre-teaching new vocabulary (2-3 minutes) • To pre-teach Sts new words before the lesson

T elicits the meaning of new vocabulary with Sts before reading the text.

Gist reading (3-4 minutes) • To give Sts a chance to practice scan reading more

T ask Sts to read the article about Mexico City again and find out what the writer thinks the hardest thing to deal with in the this city is.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To elicit the answer from Sts in an open class feedback.

T elicits the answer from the Sts in an open class feedback. (the traffic).

Reading for details (4-5 minutes) • To get Sts to practice comprehensive reading

T points to the 6 items from Q3a and ask them to read the article again find out what Peter Taylor says about these things.

Feedback (3-4 minutes) • To give Sts a chance to share their ideas

T asks Sts to work in pairs and check answers. T may change seats, so Sts can work with a different partner.

Open Class feedback (2-3 minutes) • To share ideas in an open class feedback

T elicits answers from Sts in an open class feedback.

Post reading (3-4 minutes) • To give Sts a chance to review lexis related to feelings and opinions from the previous lesson and to share their ideas and experiences widely.

T divides Sts into groups of 3 or 4 and points to questions 1,2 and 3 and then asks them to discuss these questions
