Demo lesson (KHAS): Health/Doctors without borders
Intermediate level

Description

Students learn health-related vocabulary and practice listening of excerpts from podcasts of a healthcare charity organisation that is working in disaster-hit and poor countries of the world. Students will first get to know the concept of healthcare charity through promo video of Medicines Sans Frontiers and initial discussion about nearby areas where the help of Humanitarian NGOs is needed. Then Ss will do a reading exercise preparing them for listening tasks. After listening for gist and for detail Ss will expand what they have learned to their own experiences about the heathcare system in Turkey through discussions and short writing task.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about International Medi-Aid in the context of healthcare NGOs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of heath-related vocabulary in the context of healthcare in different countries.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of healthcare.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

– Promo video of MSF from YouTube (1 minute): Ask the Ss to think about where this video could've been shot. – Pause the video at the electric cut scene: elicit ideas of what will happen to the boy who's needing medical attention —> continue video and ask from the Ss what happened in the end and why… – Ask Ss to think in pairs other similar Humanitarian NGOs, brief whole class FB – Ask from the Ss are there any areas near Turkey where the help of Humanitarian NGOs is needed

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

– Pre-teach vocab through Ex 1a (Which word is the odd one?), work in pairs. – Elicit the idea of podcasts from the Ss and ask do the Ss have any experience with them. Then tell the Ss about International Medi-Aid and explain it's a similar organisation as MSF. – Reading (for gist). T will give each pair different HOs with 3 headlines and three texts (from Podcast results 1–6 p. 32). One Ss of a pair is reading one text at a time and other one is matching it to correct headline, vice versa. They check the answers in pairs. T will give the answer key as a handout (also for use in the listening activity). – Contextual guesswork of vocab : students will match in pairs underlined words from the answer key to the definitions in the same HO. Check with the next pair. Vocabulary: nurses, treated, surgeon, treatment, malnutrition, clinic, funding

Listening #1 (for gist) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

– Pre-teach essential vocabulary for listening which are not in the first text by eliciting them from the Ss and using CCQs. Drill and write the words on the board. Vocabulary: disease, medicine, operation, injury. – Ss will listen to 4 extracts of podcasts and match them with the texts (number of podcast next to the text). Check in pairs, then whole class FB.

Listening #2 (for detail) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

– Hand out the questions (Ex 3b) and give time to the Ss to read them through (1 minute). Ss listen to the recording second time and answer the questions individually. – Play second time if needed. Check in pairs. Whole class FB noting the justification of answers.

Post-Listening #1 (Speaking activity, can be skipped if short of time) (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

– Pre-teach vocab for speaking activity using examples, situations and CCQs. Vocabulary: Private/state hospitals, health insurance, taxes, local doctors, dentist – Ask the Ss to discuss in small groups (3-4 Ss) about the healthcare system of their country and how the situation is different compared to countries in the podcasts. After initial discussion, they should write bullet points in to positive/negative table. Vocab will help them in this task. Whole class FB.

Post-listening #2 (Writing/Speaking) (11-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

– Ask the Ss individually to write a short paragraph about their best and worst experience of healthcare in Turkey (5-7 minutes). – Then Ss should discuss their experiences in small groups reading their paragraphs. – Then they decide who has the best and worst experience in the group. Whole class FB of different experiences.
