Main Aims

  • First lesson: To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about a 16-year-old head teacher in the context of personal goals
  • Second lesson: To provide clarification, review and practice of phrasal and prepositional verb collocations about work and commitment

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of personal goals

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Check names. Ask Ss how old they were when they got the first jobs and how old people are when they get positions of responsibility. Ss discuss in pairs/small groups. Take w/c FB.

Pre-Reading (14-14 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show Ss visuals and headline. Give them a few minutes to read, then elicit reactions. Read the first paragraph of the text to the class. Ask Ss what questions they'd like to know about this boy. Elicit a couple of questions. Ss work in pairs/groups to come up with questions. Monitor and help where needed. Ss peer check and some Ss write answers on the w/b.

While-Reading #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist and specific information reading task

Tell Ss to read quickly and check their answers. Set a time limit of 1 minute. Ss read and check. Ask Ss to check their answers with their partners. Monitor. Take w/c FB and deal with any questions.

While-Reading #2 (15-17 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed and specific information reading task

Focus Ss on the questions in ex 2. Get Ss to read them through and discuss with their partners what they remember without looking at the text. Ss then read again to find out the answers. Ss work in pairs/small groups to check their answers. If Ss finish early, get them to check with other partners. Take wc FB - if Ss are not sure, send them back to the text to read again.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Regroup the Ss so they get to speak to someone new. Focus Ss on the questions in ex 3. Ss discuss their ideas. Monitor and take note of any points of interest. Take some general FB - ask Ss if they agreed or disagreed and if other Ss think the same.

Second stage: Language focus - highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and to gauge their prior knowledge of it

Ask Ss to turn the text over. Ask questions to elicit examples of the TL from the text. Put these on the w/b. Focus Ss on the phrasal and prepositional verbs in ex 4 and their matching collocations. Elicit a couple of examples to check understanding of the task. Ss work in pairs/small groups to match the collocations. Ss peer-check with other groups - 1 x S comes to the w/b to write up an answer key.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Check answers on the w/b are correct. Focus on the pairs of verbs and elicit differences. Ask CCQs to check meaning - elicit examples to further check. Focus Ss on the form - elicit and highlight on the w/b. Elicit which are separable and what happens if the object is a pronoun. Focus on pronunciation - encourage Ss to notice features of connected speech, e.g. links between consonant and vowel sounds. Drill.

Checking learning (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Check Ss have blank paper and a pen. Ask Ss to write their answers down to a series of questions. Use the first one to check Ss know what they should write. Read out the questions - Ss listen and note their answers 1 - What are you working on at the moment in your lives? 2 - How easy do you find it to keep up high standards at work or university? 3 - Have you signed up for any courses recently? If yes, what? 4 - How much extra work can you take on at one time? 5 - Have you ever dropped out of anything? If yes, what and why? 6 - What would you like to give up? 7 - Are you working towards anything at the moment? If yes, what?

Freer Practice and Personalisation (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language. To provide an opportunity to practise speaking for fluency.

Ss stand up and talk to different Ss about their answers and find out if anyone has the same. Monitor and encourage Ss to talk to different people. Take notes of any interesting points or errors. Take w/c FB - find out if anyone had the same ideas. Do delayed error correction.
